You must listen to me. Holding a grudge is dangerous for a child of Hades. It is our fatal flaw. You have to forgive. You have to promise me this.

–Bianca talking to her brother in The Battle of the Labyrinth.

Bianca di Angelo was a Greek demigod, a daughter of Hades and Maria di Angelo, and the older sister of Nico di Angelo. She became a Hunter of Artemis after being saved along with Percy Jackson, Grover Underwood, Thalia Grace, and her brother Nico by the Hunters. She later died (killed by one of Hephaestus' defective automatons, Talos) at the age of twelve and chose to be reborn after reaching Elysium.

History[]

Early Life[]

Not much is known about Bianca's past. She was born in Venice, Italy to Maria Di Angelo and Hades in 1930 (Her brother, Nico was born 2 years later), before World War II, so Hades never broke the oath he took with his brothers to never have any more demigod children. She was raised in a Catholic household. At the age of 8, she visited Diocletian's palace with her mother and brother.

Death of Maria[]

Bianca and Nico both moved to Washington, D.C. at some point. When she and her brother were very little, their mother, Maria, died when Zeus struck the hotel they were staying in with lightning in an attempt to kill the siblings, to circumvent the Great Prophecy. However, they were protected by Hades as he erected an impenetrable wall of black energy to shield them from Zeus's bolt; however, Hades was not able to protect their mother in time. Afterward, a devastated Hades ordered the Fury Alecto to take Nico and Bianca to the Underworld and bathe them in the River Lethe, in order to wipe their memories.

Washington D.C. and the Lotus Hotel and Casino[]

In The Titan's Curse, Bianca recalls that after her memory was erased they went back to Washington D.C. and stayed in a Hotel/Casino for a couple of months, with a lawyer (Alecto in disguise) checking in on them every once in a while. Time in the Lotus Hotel/Casino moves slower than time outside, so when Bianca and Nico thought they had spent a couple of months in the casino, the truth was that they actually spent about 70 years in there. After all this time Alecto, disguised as another lawyer came and drove the Di Angelos all the way to Maine, where they attended the military boarding school, Westover Hall.

Life in the Twenty-First Century[]

The siblings school tuition at Westover was paid for by Hades using what Nico and Bianca thought to be a trust fund left to them by their parents. In The Titan's Curse, Bianca mentioned that the summer before she left Westover Hall (during the events of The Lightning Thief), she and Nico visited Washington D.C. once again, and were very surprised to see several subway stations that had not been there before; she later mentions that during their visit, several monsters (disguised as mortals) attempted to attack them in an alley. Nico also mentions seeing a bus driver with ram's horns (most likely a satyr in disguise), though Bianca had not believed him at the time.

In The House of Hades, Nico mentions that Bianca was the only one who always accepted him. This most likely implies that Bianca knew about her brother being homosexual before she died and chose rebirth.

Percy Jackson and the Olympians[]

The Titan's Curse[]

After being rescued from Dr. Thorn by Thalia, Percy, Grover, The Hunters and Artemis, Bianca is invited to join the Hunt. After some convincing done by Zoë Nightshade, Bianca pledges herself to Artemis and accepts the offer, unknowingly removing herself from the Great Prophecy. Percy is shocked that Bianca joined, because she has her younger brother Nico that she seemed very protective of.

The next day Artemis orders her twin brother Apollo to bring Percy, Nico, Grover, Thalia, and The Hunters to camp. Apollo agrees and takes them to camp in his sun chariot. When the Hunters arrive at camp, they immediately head to Cabin 8 ignoring Grover's help and not wanting to interact with any campers. After dinner, Chiron then announces that there will be a game of Capture the Flag, since this is a tradition for whenever the Hunters come to camp. The Hunters defeated the campers. Shortly after, the Oracle comes to give Zoë Nightshade a prophecy about a quest to save Artemis. There is then a meeting to determine who will go on the quest. Zoë does not want any male to accompany her on the quest, with an exception of the satyr Grover Underwood. The quest members are Zoë, Bianca, Phoebe, Thalia, and Grover. On the day to leave for the quest, Phoebe in covered in hives from a shirt the Stoll brothers tricked her into wearing, which was secretly covered in centaur blood. This was supposed to be revenge for what she did to the Stoll brothers during Capture the Flag. Without any time to waste, Bianca departs for the quest with just four people.

Without anybody knowing, Percy Jackson follows them on their quest, riding on his pegasus Blackjack. Percy then spies on the enemies using Annabeth's Yankees Cap, which turns the wearer invisible. Percy then runs into Thalia, Grover, Zoë, and Bianca in the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum, where they receive all the information. Shortly after, the Nemean Lion attacks. Bianca helps by climbing to higher ground and shooting arrows at the Lion.

While traveling through the desert, they cross through the Junkyard of the Gods, which Aphrodite warned them not to take anything. Bianca shows lots of fascination in everything in the Junkyard, Especially a Hunter's bow that turns into a crescent shaped hair clip. When the five were about to leave, one of Hephaestus' automatons, Talos, attacks. Percy and Bianca hide from Talos together, where Percy accuses Bianca of taking the Hunters Bow. Bianca then informs Percy that she had not taken the Hunters Bow, but a Mythomagic figurine for her younger brother, Nico, because he had collected many and that figurine was the only one missing in his collection. Percy and Bianca then came up with a very dangerous and deadly plan to defeat Talos. Percy says that he'll do it, but Bianca doesn't allow him, because she believes that she should face Talos since she was the one who took the figurine. Before going, Bianca gives Percy the figurine and tells him to give it to Nico if anything happens. Bianca starts out with the plan working well, but then Talos crushes Bianca as Talos falls. Zoë, Percy, Thalia, and Grover start desperately looking for Bianca with no luck. Grover offers to stay a night to try to find her tomorrow, but the others say it is no use, because it was prophesied that a quest member would be lost in 'The land without rain', which is the desert. Percy felt responsible for Bianca's death, as he thought that it should have been him.

After returning to Camp, Percy was forced to inform Nico of his sister's death. A distraught Nico blamed Percy for the loss of Bianca whom Nico could sense was currently standing in the Fields of Asphodel being judged. Four Skeleton warriors appear out of nowhere. Nico screams 'Go Away', opening a fissure in the ground which the Skeleton warriors fell through. After this, Percy found the figurine and realized that Nico was a son of Hades. Based on Bianca's story, Percy also figures out that Hades did not break the Pact of the Big Three but instead Nico and Bianca had been kept in the Lotus Casino for decades.

The Battle of the Labyrinth[]

Percy later finds out that Bianca is sending him Iris-messages so he could see what Nico and the ghost King Minos were up to after the son of Hades had fled Camp Half-Blood.

Later, Bianca comes back as a ghost, through a ritual performed by Nico who was persuaded by King Minos. She explains to Nico that her death wasn't Percy's fault and there was nothing he could have done to help, as she made the fatal decision herself. She also tells him he must forgive Percy, as holding grudges is the fatal flaw for children of Hades. This allows her brother to make amends with the son of Poseidon, and ensure he is on the gods' side for the war.

The Demigod Files[]

Percy Jackson and the Sword of Hades[]

Thalia Grace mentions the fallen huntress when seeing Nico after over a year. She is later mentioned by Percy when meeting with Melinoe, saying he has accepted her death and moved on along with Lee Fletcher and Zoë Nightshade.

The Last Olympian[]

Bianca appears to Nico when he tries to summon their mother's spirit. She warns Nico not to summon their mother; explaining that she is the one ghost he is not allowed to summon and that she has been hidden by Hades due to his grief over her death. Instead of summoning her, Nico sees a memory from his early childhood, where Maria was killed by Zeus in an attempt to kill the children.

The Heroes of Olympus[]

The Son of Neptune[]

Hazel Levesque

Hazel, her Roman paternal half-sister.

Nico mentioned to his half-sister Hazel Levesque that Bianca chose to be reborn, presumably trying for three rebirths and three selections for Elysium, so that she could earn entry into the Isles of the Blest. Nico was devastated by this, as he was planning to sneak her out of the Underworld, because nobody would have noticed due to Death have being captured. So, instead of sneaking Bianca out, he brought Hazel with him, for a second chance at life.

The House of Hades[]

While in Italy with Hazel and Frank Zhang, Nico mentioned that he and Bianca came there once with their mother, Maria di Angelo when he was six and Bianca was eight.

The Blood of Olympus[]

Her brother sees a memory of him and Bianca walking along the great canal in Venice during their childhood. Later, while unconscious, he dreams of Bianca sitting in the dining pavilion at Camp Half-Blood with the Hunters of Artemis. In the dream, Bianca smiles and laughs with her new friends before turning into Hazel Levesque.

The Trials of Apollo[]

The Tower of Nero[]

Bianca’s death is mentioned by Will Solace as one of the causes of Nico’s current mental state.

The Sun and the Star: A Nico di Angelo Adventure[]

Maria and Bianca appear to Nico in a dream, explaining that although they have both moved on, they were granted one last visit with him by Hades who proves that he is real. Hades reveals that he's the one who sent Nico after Iapetus, causing Maria to frown when Nico mentions that Hades had once told him that he was annoyed that Nico wasn't as good of a demigod as Bianca. On Maria's prompting, Hades explains that Percy Jackson had changed a lot of things for the gods, making them rethink their priorities, standards and behaviors, causing Hades to have second thoughts after he sent Nico the prophecy and realized that it put Will Solace in danger too. However, Nico had made Hades incredibly proud so he decided to break the rules and show him how proud he is by allowing his son to see Maria and Bianca. Nico's family express their pride in him and tell Nico to go and be happy with Will for himself. Nico is finally able to let his mother and sister go, noting that they seem completely at peace as they vanish.

The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical[]

Bianca appears briefly in the song Drive, when Percy, Annabeth, and Grover encounter her in the Lotus Hotel and Casino. Annabeth and Percy have a small argument on whether or not to spend the night here. Annabeth mentions the Lotus Eaters from The Odyssey, saying that "one night could last one hundred years." Percy assumes that is irrelevant, and asks a young girl how long she has been there. The girl, revealed outside of the musical to be Bianca, replies with, "Why, my brother and I arrived just yesterday: May 1st... 1939!" The gang then decides to "sleep on the road."

Appearance[]

At the beginning of The Titan’s Curse, Bianca is described as having “olive skin and silky dark hair”, a trait she shares with her younger brother Nico. Percy also notes that she was wearing a floppy green cap that constantly got in her face. After joining the Hunters of Artemis, Bianca abandons her green cap and pulls her hair back into a braid in a fashion similar to Zoe. It is then revealed that Bianca has a splash of freckles across her nose. She also wears silvery clothes like all the other Hunters. Because she joined the Hunters, Bianca’s skin faintly glows silver, as if she had been “taking showers in liquid moonlight”. According to Percy, Bianca looked like she had been working out, which may indicate that she had become slightly muscular after joining the Hunters. It is also stated that Bianca bears a strong resemblance to her mother, Maria, as the two have the same smile.

Personality[]

Zoë Nightshade described Bianca as caring and having a kind heart, which made her ideal for the next lieutenant. In the books, it is also shown that Bianca loves her younger brother Nico very much, but is tired of caring for him all her life, leading her to join the Hunters in a heartbeat. When Bianca first joined the Hunt, Percy was a little annoyed and shocked as Bianca had a little brother who couldn't join the Hunt. Later, Percy realized and accepted Bianca's motives after she told him that she joined the Hunt so she could live her own life and not be Nico's "babysitter". She also told Percy that she felt okay, leaving Nico at camp, because she figured if there were more people like Percy at camp, Nico would be fine. During this conversation. Percy describes Bianca as more confident, she keeps her hair up and back in a braid, she doesn't cover her face with her green cap, and she looks you in the eye when talking, all which she acquired after joining the Hunt.

Fatal Flaw[]

Bianca di Angelo's fatal flaw may have been holding grudges, like Nico's. After her death, Bianca says that holding grudges are very dangerous for children of Hades. Bianca's flaw could also have been personal loyalty or having a much too strong bond with those she loves, such as her brother. This may be because Bianca was killed when she picked up a Mythomagic figurine of Hades, the only Mythomagic figure Nico didn't have, an act of misplaced sibling love.

Abilities[]

  • ADHD: Like most demigods, Bianca possessed inborn supernatural battle reflexes and senses that she used to analyze the fighting style of her opponent.
  • Dyslexia: Bianca's brain was "hard-wired" for divine Ancient Greek instead of modern languages, so she had trouble reading English.
  • Fighting Skills: In The Titan's Curse, Bianca is shown to fight decently, as she held off Talos by herself.
  • Intelligence: Bianca was smart as she managed to realize Percy was spying on her and Zoë.
  • Bravery: Bianca was brave, as she calmly sacrificed herself to save the quest.
  • Intimidation: Bianca could be frightening as she was the daughter of Hades.

As a child of Hades, one the Big Three, Bianca is an extremely powerful demigod. However, her lack of knowledge about her powers or real experience with using them causes Bianca to only display a fraction of her true power during her lifetime. She also lacks the control to replicate feats such as instinctively destroying one of the skeleton warriors.

  • Necromancy: As a daughter of Hades, Bianca was able to control the dead.
    • Summon and banish the dead.
    • Destroy Skeleton Warriors. While fighting one, Bianca stabbing the skeleton warrior through the chest causes it to go up in flames. However, she is unable to replicate this feat when she actively tries to do it. It was also partially causing the Skeletons were possibly aware of what she can do.
    • Communicate telepathically with ghosts.
    • She could command the dead to follow her authority, as seen during The Battle of the Labyrinth.
    • Release souls.
    • Turn people into ghosts.
    • Sense death.
    • Physically touch ghosts.
    • Summon ghosts from the dead.
  • Osteokinesis: As a daughter of Hades, Bianca could control the bones of skeletons.
    • She could summon bones.
  • Geokinesis: As a daughter of Hades, Bianca could control and manipulate the earth.
  • Shadow Travel (possibly): As a daughter of Hades, Bianca could shadow travel although she never did.

As a Hunter of Artemis Bianca was granted some specific abilities. This abilities were depending on Artemis power.

  • Immortality, unless she died in battle or falls in love.
  • Superhuman accuracy and hunting skills like running, jumping, stealth, etc.
  • She was naturally stronger and faster than an average mortal, demigod, or nymph.
  • She usually had the upper hand in battle because of her fighting powers.
  • She could summon her bow and arrows whenever she needs them.
  • She had excellent aim with her bow and arrows.
  • She could talk to wild animals, mainly wolves, an animal of Artemis.

Relationships[]

Friends[]

Percy Jackson

Percy Jackson, the demigod who reintroduced her to the world beyond the mist.

The daughter of Hades had a great deal of respect for the son of Poseidon. Despite the minor falling out they had when Bianca learned he was spying on her and Zoë, they remained close as he and the others comforted her when she learned she spent seventy years at the Lotus Hotel and Casino.

In return, Percy was disappointed when Bianca joined the Hunt and felt personally responsible for her death, showing that he cared for her a great deal. Percy also stated that he liked talking to Bianca as she was much more laid back than Zoë.

She would contact him when her brother started to go down a dark path.

Nightshade RR

Zoë Nightshade, who girl who convinced her to join the hunt.

Zoë invited Bianca to join the Hunt and believed that Bianca had the ability to replace her as first lieutenant someday. Zoë cried when Bianca died, blaming herself for choosing an amateur Hunter for a suicide mission.

Family[]

Nico di Angelo

Nico di Angelo, her younger brother.

Nico and Bianca shared a very close relationship. When they were younger they were inseparable, chasing each other in the front of a hotel as Hades and Maria talked. As their mother died when they were young, Bianca assumes an almost motherly role, bearing the responsibility that a parent would normally bear. Bianca was very overprotective and close with Nico, and Bianca tended to argue with Nico a lot and get annoyed, like when they were arguing at the Westover Hall school dance, waving their hands. And when Nico said it was cool when he found out they were demigods, Bianca said it was not cool and that they weren’t demigods. Bianca also tends not to believe Nico, like when he said when a bus driver had thorns. However, Bianca deeply loved Nico and said he was the only family she had left, feeling alone. Nico also loved Bianca, clinging to her and telling her that he was scared when the Manticore kept attacking them. Nico also stood up for Bianca when he called her an Insufferable girl. It is mentioned that Bianca was strict at the movies she let him watch. The two did have happy memories together, like Nico and Bianca walking through the National mall in Washington D.C in the 1940s.

Because of Nico's dependency on Bianca, it led to her joining the Hunters of Artemis to be free of the responsibility of raising her brother, and was reassured that Camp Half-Blood would care for him. Bianca talked to Nico and told him that she was joining, and Nico became very mad and grumpy at Bianca for leaving him. While on the bus back to Camp, Bianca whispered something in Nico's ear, but he scowled and looked away. However, Nico still had a love for Bianca left, and he told Percy to join the quest to protect her and made him promise to. On the quest, Bianca confided in Percy that she loved Nico but she wanted to know what It’d be like to not be a big sister 24/7. But Bianca proved that she still cared for Nico when she died trying to get a gift for Nico in Junkyard of the Gods, the only Mythomagic figurine he didn’t have. She then told Percy to give it to him and tell Nico she was sorry.

When Percy returned, Nico immediately asked him where Bianca was. When Nico found out she was dead, he threw her figurine on the ground and took all of his anger from Bianca onto Percy, and ran away from camp in tears. Nico mentioned that he also had nightmares of Bianca, and could feel her being judged in the Fields of Asphodel.

While Nico was gone, he was approached by Minos, who offered to do a soul for a soul: Daedalus for Bianca. Nico wanted to do it and wanted his sister to be back. For months, Nico tried summoning Bianca’s ghost, but Bianca wouldn't answer. In desperation, Bianca sent an Iris Message to Percy showing Nico's state, badly wanting revenge against his sister's death and wanting revenge, and begged Minos on how to get Bianca back. He later summoned Theseus, and begged him on how to get his sister back, and how to do "a soul for a soul". Later, at the Triple G Ranch, Nico successfully summoned Bianca with the help of Percy and his friends.

When Bianca appeared to Nico, Nico was excited to see her, and her face was sad, like she was dreading this for a long time, and told Nico that he had gotten tall. Nico questioned why she hadn’t answered him and she said he hoped he would give up, making Nico’s heartbreak. Bianca told Nico not to try to save him and that Percy is right, putting her hand on his face. Bianca told Nico that he must forgive Percy, and that grudges are fatal flaws for children of Hades, and that he must promise her. She then told him to admit that he was mad at her, not Percy, and he was mad at her for abandoning him to join the Hunters, and she apologized for that. But she said he must overcome the anger. Nico was still in denial though, wanting his sister back. Bianca then started to tell him that if he loved him, to not bring her back, but then she said that Tartarus was stirring and that she must leave. Nico didn't want her to leave, but Bianca said she loved him and remembered what she said. Nico cried that night about the exchange and was jealous of Percy that Bianca summoned him, but gave up on trying to get her back. After the Battle of the Labyrinth, Bianca said goodbye to Nico.

However, Nico saw Bianca another time after this, in The Last Olympian. She appeared to him when he was trying to summon Maria di Angelo, their mother, and Bianca warned him not to, saying she was the one ghost they were not allowed to summon, because the knowledge was too painful, and that holding grudges was dangerous for children of Hades. Nico said that he knew that, and told Bianca to stop trying to protect her and that he wasn't the same as he was before. Bianca told him he didn't understand, but Nico brushed her off and put his hand through the mist, making her disappear. Nico also has a bit of self-hatred for not being Bianca, when Hades says she should have survived, not him. Nico later mentions that he had seen her spirit a few times in the Underworld.

After the events of The Last Olympian, Thanatos was captured, and Nico used this as an opportunity to try to get Bianca back. However, he was saddened to discover that Bianca had chosen Rebirth. He soon rescued Hazel, and he became very protective over her, not wanting to lose another sister. Nico would sometimes accidentally call her Bianca, making Hazel have a taste of metal in her mouth, reminding Hazel that she wasn't Nico's "real" sister. In The Son of Neptune, when he told how she was dead to the others, Nico was still very saddened by it, and sad how he would never see her again. In The House of Hades, it was still hard for Nico to talk about his past and Bianca, because it saddened him. He eventually told Jason that Bianca was the only person who accepted him, and she died, not yet fully over her death. This also suggests that Bianca knew that Nico is gay and accepted him, a secret that he had closely kept. In The Blood of Olympus, he dreamed of Bianca.

In The Tower of Nero, Nico's boyfriend Will Solace states that Nico's currently depressed state is partially due to the loss of Bianca.

In The Sun and the Star: A Nico di Angelo Adventure, Bianca appears to Nico in a dream along with Hades and Maria. Together, the three express their love and pride in Nico and urge him to find happiness with Will. This visit allows Nico to finally move on from the death of his sister who he notes looks to be completely at peace.

Maria di Angelo-RR

Maria di Angelo, her mother.

Bianca's relationship with her mother is unknown as Maria died when she and Nico were very young, and Hades had them taken to the Lethe to have their memories wiped.

HadesGG

Hades, her father.

Before Bianca died, Hades had originally hoped that she would be the hero of the first Great Prophecy. Later on, he frequently told Nico that his sister would have done a better job than him, showing that he favoured Bianca over Nico. Though Hades and Nico managed to build a better relationship in time, and Bianca later choose rebirth, she remained an extremely difficult subject between her father and brother.

Etymology[]

  • Bianca means "white" in Italian, referring to her father's albino-like skin.
  • Di Angelo means "Of the angel".[1][2] From this, her full name means "White of the angel" or simply "White angel."

Trivia[]

  • In The House of Hades, Nico mentions that Bianca was the only one who accepted him. This most likely suggests that Bianca knew about Nico being homosexual, even when they were young children.
  • It was revealed in The Blood of Olympus, that the silver skull ring worn by Nico was a gift from Bianca, her last gift to him.
  • Bianca, Nico, and Thalia are the only Greek demigods of the Big Three whose aging has been tampered with by their godly parent.
  • Bianca is the only known demigod to die on their first quest. She is also the youngest known character to die in the series.
  • Bianca has been in the River Lethe twice: Once as a child with her brother on orders of Hades to keep them safe, and once in death so she could be reborn.
    • Another likely reason why Bianca chose to be reborn would be to ensure that Nico could never be tempted or manipulated into trying to restore her to life again, which is exactly what he tried to do in The Battle of the Labyrinth, and later tried again just before the events of The Son of Neptune, which led to him restoring Hazel to life instead.
  • Bianca is the first known child of Hades in the series. Her parentage helped her defeat the skeletons, while no one else could even harm them.
  • Bianca is the only child of the Big Three to never encounter giants.
  • Bianca is the only known demigod to die before her parentage was revealed.
