Aut vincere aut mori. Conquer or Die.

Lupa, about the way that Camp Jupiter is run.

Camp Jupiter is a camp designated to protect and train the children of the Roman gods and their descendants. Its entrance is a service tunnel near the main Caldecott Tunnel in the Oakland Hills, near San Francisco. The current praetors are Hazel Levesque and Frank Zhang. It is the Roman counterpart to Camp Half-Blood.

History[]

In ancient times, Romulus and Remus decided to found a new city. However, they could not come to an agreement where the city ought to have been erected, and Remus, scorning his brother's attempt to build a wall, merely leapt over it in a show of mocking. Romulus, in his anger, slew Remus, and named the new city after himself.

Their culture became more disciplined, militaristic, and warlike which the gods eventually adopted; producing demigods different from those conceived by their Greek aspects. A rivalry developed between Greek and Roman demigods which subsequently lead to many conflicts over the millennia. The last of these wars mirrored the mortal's civil war of the 1860s. Because of the tremendous death toll, the gods decided to completely separate their children to avoid further bloodshed by weaving the Mist so thickly that the two rival groups forgot each other and would ensure that it would remain so ever since.

Chiron, Lupa, and most others who also knew of this swore upon the River Styx never to speak of it. Even after Hera/Juno had violated the agreement by revealing Jason Grace to the Greeks and Percy Jackson to the Romans, Chiron wanted to keep this promise. He broke it, only when he was forced to tell the story to the campers during a War Council meeting.

According to Jason, the campers are more disciplined, formal, and warlike like their gods. Lupa is a harsh trainer who respects only the strong. In addition, campers are not only comprised of demigods but also legacies.

Percy Jackson and the Olympians[]

The Last Olympian[]

Although the camp's existence wasn't known until The Lost Hero, while the Greek campers fought off the invasion in Manhattan, the Roman campers assaulted and conquered Mount Othrys. According to Jason's memories, they scaled the mountain and battled "hordes of snake monsters." Jason personally defeated the Titan Krios and toppled Kronos' black throne. The Greeks were told that the palace on Mount Othrys crumbled after the attack on Olympus failed, as the palace was destroyed as a result of Kronos' destruction. In actuality, however, the Roman legion destroyed it and thought that Kronos had vanished after they destroyed his throne and his main base on Mount Othrys.[1]

The Heroes of Olympus[]

The Lost Hero[]

Jason Grace-Redraw

Jason, a former praetor.

Camp Half-Blood rediscovers its existence after Chiron vaguely tells them of the Greeks and Romans' separation after a war going on between the two groups, which mirrored the mortals' American Civil War in 1861-1865. Percy and Jason, the Greek and Roman camps' recognized leaders have switched places and become amnesic to their past in their home camps and only remember a single loved one special to their lives (Jason's being his sister Thalia Grace and Percy's being his girlfriend Annabeth Chase) due to Hera/Juno. The camp was said to be harsher than Camp Half-Blood and that the weak do not survive. All Roman campers wear plain purple t-shirts and can earn a similar tattoo to that of Jason Grace, a series of lines like a bar code to signify how many years they were at the camp, with the initials SPQR (Senatus Populusque Romanus - The Senate and the People of Rome) and the symbol of their godly parent on top. Both heroes regained their memories fully after their quests for the opposite camp and both camps held a reunion when the Argo II arrived at Camp Jupiter.

The Son of Neptune[]

When Percy first comes to Camp Jupiter he defeats the Gorgons and met the demigods Reyna, Hazel Levesque, and Frank Zhang. After Percy, Hazel, and Frank finish their quest, they find out that Camp Jupiter is under siege by Polybotes, son of Gaea and bane of Neptune. They hurry back to camp on Arion and engage the monsters, ultimately helping the Romans win the battle (Percy defeating Polybotes with the help of Terminus). The other campers lift Percy into the air and vote for him as their new praetor to replace the missing Jason. When Percy gets a video message that Camp Half-Blood is arriving in a few hours in a warship (in peace), the legion is told to stand ready in the event of aggression by the Greek campers. Octavian strictly disapproves of this but due to Percy's utter confidence and Reyna's approval, the camp lets the Argo II come in peace.

The Mark of Athena []

The Argo II stops at Camp Jupiter to pick up Percy, Hazel, and Frank. There, the seven and the Romans have dinner where they talk about the prophecy and the seven of the prophecy. Now that Jason is back, however, Octavian mentions that there are now three Praetors instead of the limited two. Percy says that they will discuss this problem later and if he needs to, he will step down and allow Jason to have the title. Percy also mentions that for the time being, they both outrank him and order him to be quiet. Octavian, on the other hand, is furious that Percy takes the title so lightly and at Percy's attitude toward him.

During the meal, Ella mentions an entire prophecy when she sees Annabeth, a child of the wisdom goddess. Annabeth quickly makes Octavian doubt it is a real prophecy after seeing Percy's panicked face and soon the whole camp believes it was something she read from a library book or something. After lunch, Reyna and Annabeth have a talk together while in New Rome, where Reyna explained the difference between the Roman and Greek gods, as well as the two's hatred for each other. Leo Valdez, son of Hephaestus and one of the 7, is soon after possessed by an eidolon and under its influence fires the Argo II's weapons on the camp, thus, the Romans begin to attack the seven, as they hastily go aboard the Argo II.

After the Argo II leaves the camp, Octavian whipped in cohorts into a battle frenzy. He lead the camp on a war march against the seven, chasing them across the country before losing them in the Mediterranean Sea. Still wanting blood, Octavian turns Camp Jupiter's attention toward Camp Half-Blood, setting up a forward base and planning possible invasion routes.

The House of Hades[]

Jason gives up his praetorship and gives Frank a field promotion to Praetor while they are in the House of Hades.

The Blood of Olympus[]

Reyna mentions that the camp is being guarded by Lupa and her wolves while the legion is away.

The Trials of Apollo[]

The Dark Prophecy[]

A prophecy spoken from the Oracle of Trophonius tells of an attack on the camp on the new moon in five days time.

The Burning Maze[]

The foretold attack is fended off according to Leo, however many lives were lost. There was also a considerable amount of damage done, but among the survivors are Frank, Reyna, and Hazel.

Camp Jupiter Classified: A Probatio's Journal[]

The camp is plagued with misfortune as the ancile, a cello shaped shield was stolen by Mimi, a former demigod who was kicked out for her uncontrollable foul odor. However, it is retrieved by Claudia, a new comer to camp.

The Tyrant's Tomb[]

Apollo and Meg McCaffrey spend a few days at camp when looking for the Oracle of Cumae. After the camp faces off against the forces of Triumvirate Holdings in the Battle of San Francisco Bay, the legion's population as well as the population of New Rome is severely decreased, to the point where both populations combined could only fill a building. However, Caligula and Commodus are killed by Frank Zhang and Apollo while Diana and the Hunters of Artemis help to destroy Tarquin and his undead army. After the battle, Reyna resigns from the legion in favor of joining the Hunters of Artemis with Hazel Levesque being elected to take her place.

The Tower of Nero[]

After becoming a god again, Apollo visits the camp to check in on their recovery progress. He learns that in the past two months they have recruited twenty new demigods and are still working on Jason’s plans for Temple Hill. They also plan on building new barracks. In addition, Percy Jackson and Annabeth Chase have arrived to begin college in New Rome.

The Sun and the Star: A Nico di Angelo Adventure[]

As they prepare to leave on their quest to Tartarus, Nico di Angelo and Will Solace contact Percy and Annabeth in New Rome via Iris Message for advice.

Known Campers[]

Reyna Ramirez

Reyna, a former praetor.

The Roman demigods are sent by their parents at a certain age to a building known as the Wolf House where they are found by Lupa. If she judges them worthy, she takes them to the Roman camp where they are eventually marked with the symbol of their godly parent and the initials SPQR. For each year they stay, they receive a bar line underneath their tattoos similar to the Greek demigods who get a bead to their necklaces every year they spend at Camp Half-Blood.

Roman Gods[]

The Roman aspects of their gods were different from the aspects of the Greeks. The following is a row of their gods:

Structural Society[]

Camp Jupiter Brochure Outside
Camp Jupiter Brochure Inside
Brochure detailing life at Camp Jupiter

Camp Jupiter has a complex societal structure, consisting of the praetors, cohorts, centurions, senators, legionnaires, and probatio.

Praetor[]

The praetors are the two elected leaders of Camp Jupiter. There can only be a maximum of two at all times, although that rule has been broken twice now.

Current Praetors[]

Former Praetors[]

Cohorts[]

Like the cabins of Camp Half-Blood, cohorts are where the campers are divided and placed in. There are five cohorts. Each cohort has 4 barracks of 10 bunks. When Percy arrived at the camp they had roughly 200 members of the legion. The first and second Cohorts are the most esteemed while the fifth is considered to be the least honored. Campers traditionally receive their place in the cohorts through family recommendation letters but also can be given acceptance by a centurion's personal recommendation.

First Cohort[]

Called the pride of Camp Jupiter, the First Cohort takes campers with the best reference letters.

Second Cohort[]

Like the First Cohort, the Second Cohort takes campers with the best recommendation letters though it may not be as esteemed as the first.

Third Cohort[]

Little is known about the Third Cohort except that it is a moderately good cohort.

Fourth Cohort[]

Little is known about the Fourth Cohort except that it's a step up from the Fifth. Their animal is the wolf.

Fifth Cohort[]

Frank Zhang

Frank Zhang, a praetor

The campers with the worst or no reference letters join the Fifth Cohort. They were the most esteemed Cohort until they lost the Eagle in the 1980s. As Jason became a praetor, he was bringing back the honor of the cohort, until he switched camps. Fortunately, the Fifth is redeemed when Percy, Hazel, and Frank brought the Eagle back with Percy receiving a promotion to Praetor for his role in saving Camp Jupiter, although he resigns when Jason returns. Following the promotion of Frank and Hazel to Praetor and Lavinia Asimov to Centurion, the whole Fifth Cohort has learned how to tap dance from Lavinia and is now a real threat in the War Games thanks to her.

Centurion[]

Centurions are the leaders of the cohorts, similar to the Head Counselors at Camp Half-Blood. They serve as the Senators at the Senate House. Each Cohort has two Centurions.

Known Centurions[]

  • Claudia's Father (Former Centurion of the Fourth Cohort)
  • Octavian (Former Centurion of the First Cohort)
  • Gwendolyn (Former Centurion of the Fifth Cohort)
  • Michael Kahale (Centurion of the First Cohort)
  • Ida (Centurion of the Second Cohort)
  • Larry (Centurion and Senator of the Second Cohort)
  • Hank (Centurion of the Third Cohort)
  • Leila (Centurion of the Fourth Cohort)
  • Dakota (Former Centurion of the Fifth Cohort)
  • Hazel Levesque (Former Centurion of the Fifth Cohort)
  • Jason Grace (Former Centurion of the Fifth Cohort)
  • Frank Zhang (Former Centurion of the Fifth Cohort)
  • Lavinia Asimov (Centurion of the Fifth Cohort)
  • Marcus (Cohort Unknown)
  • Nathan (Cohort Unknown)

Senators[]

Ten Senators are elected yearly. To qualify you must be at camp for 5 years. Senators go to discuss problems that arise. They include the Centurions, along with the Praetors. The only known Senator that wasn't a Centurion or a Praetor was Nico di Angelo, son of Hades, who served as Pluto's ambassador.

Probatio[]

Probatio are campers who have not yet proven themselves. To prove themselves they need to have done a year of service or prove themselves with an act of valor and bravery to become a full member of the legion.

Legionnaires[]

Although an official name for these demigods has not been found, the legionnaires are those who have passed Probation and are now official members of the legion.

Messengers[]

Messengers deliver messages to the Praetor(s). Some campers with a good letter could get them special jobs like the legion messenger. Messengers are exempt from the grunt work like digging ditches or conjugating Latin verbs.

Medics[]

Medics, also known as healers, help out injured legionnaires. They use nectar, ambrosia, unicorn draught, Lemurian spice, and healing balms that consisted of crocus, myrrh and unicorn horn shavings to heal the injured legionnaires. Pranjal once used a special concoction of a special strain of Stellaria media, magical chickweed, to slow down Lester's infection. They were seen helping Gwen after Octavian tried to kill her and before she came back to life again as a result of Thanatos' capture by Gaea and her giant children. They also treated the wounded following the Battle of the New Moon and the Battle of San Francisco Bay, although Pranjal, a son of Asclepius, was unable to treat Apollo's zombie infection, possibly because of his lingering godly essence. Pranjal was only able to slow it down with the intervention of Diana being required to heal it.

Known Medics[]

Veterans[]

Despite being retired from the legion, veterans can act as reserve forces in emergencies. They also sit in on Senate meetings and advise the current praetors.

Known Veterans[]

Pontifex Maximus[]

Pontifex Maximus is the highest achievable rank at Camp Jupiter. It is only used during times of war and crisis. After the Second Giant War, the idea of promoting Jason Grace to the position was discussed, but it's unknown if it ever happened before his death.

General Location[]

Camp-jupiter-map

A map of Camp Jupiter.

Camp Jupiter is located in the Oakland Hills, South of Berkeley, and Near San Francisco. The main entrance is the Caldecott maintenance service tunnel, which is at the western edge of the camp. The maintenance service tunnel, which is the entrance to camp Jupiter, was discovered to be at the coordinates of 37.854919, -122.216522. This is where new recruits are expected to be received. The tunnel was collapsed when Percy Jackson, pursued by two gorgons, fled into camp. A sentry blocked to tunnel to buy him time, and to slow down the pursuing gorgons. Over half a year later, the tunnel was destroyed during the Battle of San Francisco Bay in an explosion by Frank Zhang to take out Caligula and Commodus.

Apollo also notes a well hidden dirt road that leads from the valley through the hills and ends at the residential streets of East Oakland. This path is large enough for a Chevy four-by-four to make it through.

Field of Mars[]

Temple of Jupiter small

Temple of Jupiter Optimus Maximus

Where the campers have their War Games, marching drills, and the occasional monster hunting. Every War Game, the legionnaires build a new fort so that they never have the same challenge twice. The field has many trenches and hidden tunnels.

New Rome[]

Where retired Roman legionnaires can live, go to college, get married, and start a life. There are many different shops there and a bustling nightlife. The Forum, Coliseum, Senate House, and Circus Maximus are located in New Rome. At the south end of New Rome lies "The Lake", which is connected to "Little Tiber".

Temple Hill[]

Temple Hill is where all the temples to the Roman gods are located. The most important temples are the Temple of Bellona, Pluto's Shrine, Temple of Mars, Temple of Jupiter Optimus Maximus and Temple of Mercury. There are also shrines for Neptune, Janus and Apollo. Jason Grace was also planning on having temples and shrines built for the minor gods like Kymopoleia, Potina, and Quirinus. After his death at the hands of emperor Caligula, Jason had Apollo (turned human) and Meg McCaffrey do it for him. Following his ascension back to godhood, Apollo discovers that Frank Zhang and Hazel Levesque have continued the project, funding it using Hazel's no longer cursed jewels.

Garden of Bacchus[]

It is a garden which is located on the top of a hill in New Rome. It may or may not be dedicated to Bacchus. The garden also happens to be Reyna's favorite spot.

Principia[]

The Principia is the headquarters of the praetors. The Praetors meet at the principia to discuss important matters.

Activities[]

Camp Jupiter, like Camp Half-Blood, has a number of activities that serve as training and instruction for the young members of the legion.  Despite not having a schedule like the one presented in The Ultimate Guide, being Percy's own, we are told in Claudia's diary (Camp Jupiter Classified: A Probatio's Journal) a series of activities.  It should be added that, despite the fact that at a certain point in the diary a roulette wheel is mentioned with which tasks are assigned to campers randomly, it is not specifically known which of all the following activities are totally subject to the lottery and which are not, but more likely it is about the maintenance and cleaning of the camp and the city of New Rome specifically. Below are the activities and a brief description.

  • Breakfast: The first activity routinely done during the day at Camp Jupiter, and it takes place in the Mess Hall. To this are added lunch and dinner, whose times are not specified in any book, and that are not necessarily linked to the traditional schedule of Camp Half-Blood.
  • War Games: The most characteristic activity of Camp Jupiter, similar to the Greeks’ Capture the Flag, but it takes place in an entrenched wasteland with siege weapons and forts: The Field of Mars.
  • Excavation of trenches: Physical training (and sometimes also punishment) carried out mainly by novice or lower category campers, which in addition to serving as an exercise also helps to prepare for other activities on the Field of Mars.
  • Coliseum Training: Held in the coliseum, campers are instructed to use the many types of Roman personal weapons available at Camp Jupiter, such as swords, spears and javelins, bows, plumbata, and more.
  • Great Roman inventions: A theoretical class in which they are instructed on the inventions attributed to Rome, from war to civil.
  • Test the catapults: A task that consists of performing maintenance on siege weapons, mainly the catapults.
  • Take Hannibal out for a walk: A task that consists of making the elephant Hannibal take his daily walk.
  • Dust off the drafts: A task that consists of dusting off the drafts.
  • Unclogging the sewer: A task that consists of unclogging the sewer (not to be confused with cleaning the aqueduct).
  • Clean the aqueduct: A task that consists of removing all the matter that contaminates the drinking water of the aqueduct, such as garbage or dead animals (not to be confused with unclogging the sewer)
  • Initiation of Forts Construction: A practical class of defensive architecture that consists of erecting forts, walls, among others.
  • Tetsudo practice: A practical class that consists of the training and practice of the Testudo military formation.
  • Identify the Deity: A theoretical class in which the divinities of the Roman pantheon are instructed, mainly those of lower category and more susceptible to disappear.
  • Introduction to Elephants, Unicorns and Eagles: A practical class in which the maintenance and care of these three types of animals by campers is taught.
  • Deathball: An activity similar to paintball carried out with different types of projectiles that do not meet current safety regulations and one-handed manuballista.
  • Guard shifts: A duty that every legionnaire must perform periodically. It consists of carrying out patrols and operating mounted weapons in order to monitor and protect the camp in case of an attack.
  • March practice: A practical class that consists of the training and practice of the Roman march.

Trivia[]

  • Camp Jupiter is harsher and stricter than Camp Half-Blood and had the same traits the Romans were perceived to attain after they invaded and conquered Greece.
  • In ancient times, the Greeks showed the love of art, beauty, and gentleness; whereas the Romans showed the traits of being strict, disciplined, and warlike demonstrated throughout the books. Unlike the Romans though, the campers at Camp Jupiter appear to have little respect for the Greeks until both were reconciled with the deposition of the Athena Parthenos at Camp Half-blood.
  • Camp Jupiter was originally located in San Francisco to possibly keep watch on the Titan's base in Mount Othrys, but due to the Earthquake of 1906, the camp relocated to the east side of the Bay Area.
  • While Jason claims to be the Praetor of the First Legion in The Lost Hero, Camp Jupiter is only made up of the Twelfth. This was later revealed to be because he had made an attempt to get it changed to the First Legion before he was taken to Camp Half-Blood. This nearly caused a mutiny.
  • Unlike Camp Half-Blood, non-demigods are among the actual camp force, as long as they are Legacies which boosted the camp strength.
  • Even though the Fifth Cohort is considered the worst, it has brought in five known praetors: Jason, Percy, Frank, Hazel, and Michael Varus.
  • Camp Jupiter is in the West because the East is considered bad luck and within the Greek sphere of influence.
  • While Camp Half-Blood defended Manhattan, Camp Jupiter attacked Mount Othrys, working together without realizing it.
  • Hazel states that, if needed, the entire camp could be torn down, moved, and reassembled in three to four days due to the number of campers, and their building skills.
  • While members of Camp Jupiter are said to wear a purple t-shirt (similar to the orange Camp Half-Blood t-shirt), none of the characters from Camp Jupiter were seen wearing one in their official pictures, until Viria made new official art.
  • Despite Camp Jupiter mainly consisting of Roman demigods and Roman legacies, they appear to allow Greek legacies into the camp as well, as they did in the case of Shen Lun, legacy of Poseidon. It is possible they are unable to tell the difference.
  • Unlike Camp Half-Blood, Camp Jupiter considers fauns to be homeless monsters who are not allowed to work for the camp or search the world to recruit demigods.
  • Camp Jupiter's societal structure appears to be modeled after the Roman Republic, with the praetors being the highest ranking in the camp. This is actually a major flaw, as back in the days of the Republic, the praetors were second in ranking to the consuls, who were considered the highest-ranking magistrates.
  • According to Apollo, the campers drown a lot.
  • Hazel mentions in The Son of Neptune that each of the five cohorts can house up to forty legionnaires, leading to the conclusion that the camp can house roughly two hundred demigods and legacies at a time.
