But that was the last copy! How could Apophis destroy something so valuable?

–Cleo to Sadie Kane in the Serpent's Shadow

Cleo is a magician from Rio de Janeiro. She is currently studying magic under the Kane siblings at Brooklyn House and is in charge of their library. She follows the path of Thoth.

History[]

Cleo was born in Rio De Janeiro. At one point she found the Kanes' calling card, which led to her traveling to Brooklyn.

Once at Brooklyn, Cleo became the Nome's self-appointed librarian, and eventually decided to follow Thoth. She bonded with Khufu, presumably because of his liking toward anything ending with -o. Sadie and Carter started to depend on her to locate scrolls, artifacts or statues that they need.

When the Kanes decided to let their initiates attend Brooklyn Academy, Cleo specialized in writing. According to Sadie, she was able to write about stories from ancient times.

The Kane Chronicles[]

The Throne of Fire[]

Cleo participated in Battle of Brooklyn House, chanting incantations such as "Blind!", "Horizontal!", and "Gassy!" at the attackers.

The Serpent's Shadow[]

Sometime before the third book took place, Cleo had noted the pattern in Apophis' attacks on various Nomes. She noticed that all of the locations had a copy of Book of Overcoming Apophis, particular copies written by Setne.

Cleo is first seen at the Brooklyn library with Khufu and her shabti assistants. She had tried scouring the shadow box the Kanes had found for clues, but stated that it appeared empty. When Sadie, Carter, and Bast enter, she was ordered to leave. She left, holding Khufu's hand while promising him treats.

Cleo is present at a team meeting, first seen giggling with Jaz. As the Kanes review their encounter at Dallas, Cleo is shown to be skeptic, questioning why they should trust in vague clues and hints. After the meeting, she attends the Brooklyn Academy dance.

Later, Cleo joins the initiates at the First Nome, where they are attacked by rebel magicians. Cleo was able to defend herself from an adult magician by turning him into a copy of David Copperfield. In the fight, her arm had turned into a sunflower. Jaz was thankfully able to heal her injury. At the end, she survived with the rest of the initiates.

Demigods & Magicians[]

The Son of Sobek[]

Cleo had sensed a disturbance at Long Island.

Personality[]

Cleo is intelligent, pragmatic, and dedicated to her duties as a librarian. She is incredibly studious and organized, and she relentlessly pursues any kind of knowledge. She is determined to catalogue it and to store it, as seen when she made a master index for all of the Kanes' scrolls. Her knowledgable nature closely synchronizes with Thoth's, her patron god.

Cleo can get irritated whenever someone is careless towards works of literature. She shows disdain towards her fellow initiates for cluttering the library, and was furious when Apophis destroyed a valuable scroll. Cleo is possibly hesitant to believe anything unproven, or vague, since she shows skepticism towards their supposed plan of conquering Apophis with his shadow.

Along with being smart and intellectual, Cleo was described to have a "tender stomach". She tends to get queasy from fear, and has problems handling violence and danger, at least outside of her books. However, despite her aversion towards battle, she is capable of holding on her own, such as when she fought in the Battle of the Hall of Ages.

Abilities[]

  • Statuary Magic: Cleo studies the Path of Thoth, so can control magic statues, and can possibly create them by herself.

Trivia[]

  • Cleo's first language is Brazilian Portuguese. In moments of anxiety, she switches to her first language.
    • She is the first main universe character from Brazil, the second being Paolo Montes.
  • Cleo can speak multiple languages, including Ancient Egyptian, Portuguese, Baboon etc.
  • Funnily, Cleo managed to turn an enemy magician into a human-sized version of the book David Copperfield, which is a reference to the real life illusionist and endurance, David Copperfield.
