By Gungnir, the hallowed weapon of the All-Father, I declare that these seven heroes shall have full rights of passage through the Nine Worlds, including Valhalla.

Odin to his Einherjar in The Sword of Summer.

Gungnir (pronounced "GONG-neer"; Old Norse: "unwavering one") is the spear of the god Odin. It serves as his primary weapon, as well as his symbol of power.

History[]

After Loki, as a prank, cut the hair of Sif, the wife of Thor, he promised to replace the goddess' hair with a magnificent wig made of pure gold. To do so, he visited Svartalfheim and found a group of Dwarves called 'The Sons of Ivaldi', led by a famous craftsman Dvalin. They created a wig of gold for Sif, which couldn't be distinguished from normal hair, as well as two gifts for the gods: a ship called Skidbladnir, which was later given to Frey and a spear called Gungnir, which Loki presented to the All-Father.

During that visit, Loki's further schemes resulted in creation of Gullinbursti, a golden boar which would later become a companion of Frey, Draupnir, a self-replicating ring of Odin and Thor's hammer, Mjölnir.

Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard[]

The Sword of Summer[]

Gungnir first appears as a clicker, used by Odin to explain his plans and reasons for his absence. The All-Father then manifests the spear into its true form, to announce Magnus, Sam, Blitz, Hearth, Mallory, T.J., and Halfborn as true heroes of Valhalla, and give them permission to travel the Nine Worlds whenever they wish.

Appearance[]

Gungnir is described by Magnus as "a glowing, white spear". In mythology, Gungnir is said to be fashioned from the wood of Yggdrasil, the World Tree, with runes carved along the shaft.

Abilities[]

Gungnir is said to be "the deadliest of all spears". It is so well-balanced that it can strike any target, no matter the skill or strength of the wielder. Gungnir is said to never miss. Any oath sworn on Gungnir is unbreakable.
