I'm not choosing one of your paths. I'm making my own.

–Hazel to Hecate, The House of Hades.

Hazel Levesque is one of the seven heroes of the Prophecy of Seven. She is a fifteen-year-old Roman demigod, the daughter of Pluto and Marie Levesque, and the half-sister of Nico di Angelo and the late Bianca di Angelo. She is the current Praetor of Camp Jupiter and the former Centurion of the Fifth Cohort. She is currently in a relationship with her co-praetor Frank Zhang.

History

Early Life

On December 17, 1928, Hazel was born to Marie Levesque and the god Pluto in New Orleans, Louisiana. Marie had summoned Pluto using a spell that Hecate had found, and they fell in love. Pluto loved Marie, telling her she was brave and beautiful. After Hazel was born, Pluto was proud and swore on the River Styx that he would give Marie anything. Marie wished for all the riches of the earth from Pluto, despite his warning that the greediest wishes cause the greatest sorrows. But Marie insisted, mainly because she was tired of being poor as described in The Son of Neptune. Marie's wish gave Hazel a curse. Every precious metal that she summons from the ground would bring doom to the people who took them. Marie began to use Hazel's unique powers (a result of her wish) for selfish reasons.

Marie sold Hazel's first precious stone when she was seven, before either of them knew about her curse. Hazel remembered eating a picnic breakfast with her fondly on a morning during Mardi Gras. Marie was in a good mood: buying beignets and a bottle of champagne, even a new box of crayons for her. Hazel cheerfully drew pictures while Marie hummed. They watched the sky turn to red gold. Hazel remembers this as the happiest day of her life.

Gold popped up around Hazel’s house, as the curse only started in small quantities, and Hazel also would find them while walking up and down the street. Marie used the jewels Hazel would find as charms to sell. People would buy them and sell them for a lot of money, which brought Marie a lot of money. She became known as "Queen Marie". Marie and Hazel loved comfortably, with Marie being able to pay her bills, have steak dinner once a week, and Hazel even got a new dress. But stories started spreading, as bad things happened to people who bought the treasure. Charlie Gasceaux, who bought a bracelet, lost his arm while wearing that bracelet. Mr. Henry had a heart attack and dropped dead with a ruby he bought from Queen Marie.

Rumors began spreading about Hazel, who found the crystals. So only people who didn't live in New Orleans were the ones who bought the jewels. Marie began to resent Hazel, and became short tempered. She became wanted for murder, and her clients wanted to hang her as a witch.

Marie told Hazel that she only pretended to believe in Magic and it was all "bunk and hokum", and she was just performing. But Hazel knew it wasn't true, and she just didn't want Hazel to blame her for her curse. Marie would blame her father, telling her it was Pluto's fault. Hazel would never ask her what she meant, because it just made her angrier. As she became angrier, she listened to Gaea's voice and let it possess her.

Hazel and Marie lived in an old apartment in the French quarter above a jazz club. By the time she was thirteen, it had become festive despite the war. New recruits would talk about fighting the Japanese, get tattoos, and propose on the sidewalks. She lived next to a bakery that would make the stairwells smell of melting butter, making beignets at night.

Once, when Hazel was young, Marie took her to the dentist to get her tooth pulled. It was the only time she ever took ether. The dentist promised it would make her sleepy and relaxed, she was panicky and felt like she was floating out of her body. When the ether wore off, she was sick for three days.

As a child, Hazel went to St. Agnes Academy for Colored Children and Indians. It was mostly black kids, with a sprinkle of Latino kids, with kids as young as kindergarden and as old as highschool. It was an awful school and Hazel hated it. She was bullied and tormented by the kids there because of her mother. They called Marie a witch and told Hazel she traded with the devil. She learned about Diocletian at the academy as well. She didn't understand why other black kids bullied her, but they took her lunch, threw rocks at her, threatened to hurt her, and pushed her into water fountains. Despite her abuse, she never gave them gold or diamonds.

She was forced to attend a funeral for a classmate once, and she remembered how her dead body was terrifying.

Friendship with Sammy Valdez

When Hazel was twelve, she went into the courtyard to eat lunch. She had her hair pinned back in a bun and she wore a black dress, unlike the other kids, so she stood out as looking like a mourner at a wedding. She stayed standing against the wall, trying not to be noticed.

Unfortunately, one of Hazel's bullies, an older boy named Rufus and the largest boy on the playground, backed her into a corner and called her "Witch Girl". He forced Hazel to hand over her lunch, as it was an everyday occurrence at the time. A few other girls came over and joined in, telling Rufus not to eat it and it was probably poison. Rufus then asked if her witch mother made it, but Hazel insisted she wasn't a witch. Rufus gave Hazel her lunch back, but asked to give him a diamond. Hazel tried to defend herself, but Rufus and the bullies refused to back off. A diamond appeared between Hazel's feet, and almost grabbed it.

Thankfully, Sammy Valdez, a troublemaker, walked over, and turned it all into a game, pretending they were filming a movie. The whole courtyard laughed about the possibility that Rufus could be Clark Gable as Sammy said, embarassing him. The bell rang, and Sammy pulled Hazel out of the way. Hazel took her lunch and told Sammy that Rufus would kill him, but Sammy remarked that Rufus knows better than to tangle with him. Sammy decided to keep the diamond as a token of Hazel's favor, but promised not to sell it. Hazel thanked Sammy for being there for him, and the two ran back into the schoolhouse. Hazel began to have a crush on him.

Sammy and Hazel were good friends, with Sammy sneaking her into the "Whites Only" riding club to take care of the horses and go riding. Horses liked Hazel, unlike any other animal. Sammy always made Hazel laugh.

Moving North

Her thirteenth birthday was filled with ups and downs, as the bullying at school was getting worse. But luckily for Hazel, Sammy snuck her into the riding club. They especially wanted to go in because rumors spread that it would close due to World War Two.

That afternoon, Hazel rode a tan horse and rode so fast she left Sammy behind, leaving him winded by the time he caught up. He asked Hazel if he was "that ugly", which got a laugh out of her. They had a picnic under a magnolia tree in the cold, with the horses tethered to a fence, and shared a cupcake. Though it got smashed on the ride, Hazel thought it was the sweetest thing she had ever seen. They talked about the war, and Sammy lamented about how he wished he was old enough to go. He asked if she would write him letters if he went to war, and Hazel said yes. Sammy then kissed her on the cheek. Hazel felt like she was floating, and barely remembered the ride back to the stables. She never saw him again.

When she returned to her house, she was terrified. She saw Marie in a trance, and a voice came out that wasn't hers. She had seen her in trances before, but never like this. She ran downstairs after she heard what they were saying: how they must move north, strike back at the gods, and that Hazel was a poisoned child.

She ran into a man, who turned out to be Pluto, at the bottom of the stairs. He gripped her shoulders. Hazel was terrified, as he looked just like Adolf Hitler. He remarked how she grown, and a jewel appeared as Hazel trembled. Pluto picked it up, and Hazel protested, telling him it was cursed. But Pluto called it beautiful and apologized to Hazel for her fate. She didn't understand, but it dawned on her that he was her father. She lashed out at him in anger, her eyes filling with tears. Pluto asked Hazel if her mother ever explained her curse, and though she was too angry to speak, Pluto knew. Pluto told her she was born too soon and that although he cannot see her future clearly, she will find her place, as a descendant of Neptune would wipe away her curse. He then gave her a sketch pad and colored pencils. He said he knew her love for horseback riding and art, though she'd have to manage herself for the horse. He wished her a happy birthday, and went to speak to Marie.

Hazel just stood there, paralyzed. She wanted to run away with Sammy, kick Pluto, stomp her colored pencils, but she didn't. She crept up the stairs to see what he would do, and peeked through the door. She saw her throwing things around the parlor and screaming at him. He pleaded with her, begging to stay and explaining he kept her alive. But she called him out, and told him they were going north. He tried to tell her they would both die, but she refused to listen. Hazel wished that he would stay and argue, but he left in silence.

Marie took a deep breath and ordered Hazel to come out from the door. She clutched the colored pencils to her chest, trembling. Marie studied her like she was really a poisoned child and ordered her go pack a bag: they were leaving. Hazel asked where they were going, and Marie said Alaska, where she would "make herself useful" and start a new life. Hazel tried to question her about Pluto, but she brushed her off.

Life in Alaska

Hazel and Marie lived in Alaska for six months. They lived in a small house by the docks that shook every time the Anchorage train went by. The kitchen was a hot plate and an icebox, and a corner was closed off for Hazel: where she hung up drawings of New Orleans. She went to school, and didn't have any friends. Rumors spread around the community about how she was a witch's child. If she went too close to the children, they would jeer and throw bottles at her. Though, she did ask one local about the island she and her mother went to. He looked at her like she was crazy and insisted there was no island.

Marie worked as a servant on third avenue for railroad workers, naval soldiers, and fishermen. She came home every night with the smell of fish. At night, Marie would be possessed by the voice, giving her orders for her awful plan.

Hazel and her mother were ordered to go to Ressurection Island four to five nights a week. They worn a path into a cavern that Hazel donned "Heart of the Earth". Hazel and her mother would go into that cavern, and Hazel would work herself to tears of exhaustion, begging Gaea to stop. But she would tell her to keep going. Hazel used her powers to bring Gaea's valuables to her. At first, it was only some treasure and bubbled petroleum. But eventually, a spire began to rise and it eventually was two stories tall. The spire held Alcyoneus: the oldest child of Gaea.

Winter was the worst for Hazel, as the voice was there the longest. In the summer, Hazel stayed away from home as long as she could, climbing the hills and attracting ravens.

One day, she stayed out later than usual and saw a gorgeous tan stallion eating gold nuggets. It reminded her of the horse she had ridden with Sammy. Hazel tried to approach it, but it bolted. She spent the rest of the day chasing the horse and returned home at 10 PM after she heard the train.

Sacrificing herself

Hazel went home after chasing the horse, and saw that her corner of the room was trashed, her sketchpad ripped to shreds, and her colored pencils broken. She read the note Gaea left her, which told her to go to the island. Hazel sobbed in despair, but went to free her mother. She used the boat her mom had bought from a fisherman (who died the next day).

When she was almost at the island, a raven approached her and said: "Tonight. The last night." She asked if it was from her father, but it just repeated itself and flew towards the island.

She arrived at the cavern and saw Marie standing over the pit, possessed by Gaea. But after Hazel arrived, the voice relinquished control. Marie sobbed and apologized. Hazel knew she should be angry, but she couldn't, and put an arm around her mother. She was frail, dirty, and had grey hair. Marie explained that the voice freed her, and told her there was nothing she could do. Marie then told Hazel everything in tears: her curse, courting Pluto, finding Gaea. Hazel begged Marie to tell her how to stop her, but she was interrupted by Gaea. Gaea explained that she only brought Hazel because Marie needed incentive to finish the job: if she sacrificed herself, Hazel would live and Alcyoneus would rise. Gaea told her because of World War Two, the gods taking sides, it would be the perfect opportunity for Gaea to get revive her sons and destroy the world. Gaea would rule forever. All Marie needed to do was to step into the fissure, as a sacrifice was needed to awake her son.

Marie urged Hazel to go, but she refused. She called on her father and summoned all the riches of the island. The cavern shook. Oil bubbled and erupted as Gaea urged her to stop, that both she and her mother would die. Hazel almost stopped and hesitated, knowing she would only live thirteen years. But Marie looked at her and her eyes shone with pride. The only warmth she had been given in years. She told Hazel that she was her gift, and kissed her on the forehead and held her close. That kiss gave Hazel the strength to continue.

She used the last of her strength to crack the cavern walls. The fissure exploded, jewels went flying, and the roof collapsed. Hazel died in Marie's arms as her lungs filled with oil. The island collapsed into the bay.

The Underworld

Hazel was taken to her trial by Charon. Though Hazel didn't have a coin, he promised to take her across anyway as she was a daughter of Pluto. They arrived on a beach and Hazel went through the dark gates of Erebos. Spirits sensed she was a daughter of pluto and parted for her. Cerberus growled, but he let her pass.

The judges asked her no questions. The first argued that she thwarted Gaea, but the second argued that she raised the giant in the first place and is guilty of cowardice. The third said she did it to protect her mother and that she was young. Upon Marie's mention, Hazel asked where she was. The judges explained that though Hazel died for a noble cause, but she acted too late, but her mother influenced her. They agreed that Hazel should have Elysium and Marie will go to the Fields of Punishment. Hazel protested and told them that it wasn't fair. The first judge told her to beware and that she was destined for great things, showing her her life if she had lived. But Hazel told them her mother was misled and she loved her. Finally, the second judge said there wasn't enough good or evil and put both Hazel and her mother into the Fields of Asphodel.

Hazel, unlike the other spirits, had memories. It made her afterlife harder, especially since her mother couldn't remember her. She drifted aimlessly in those seventy years. She could see Pluto's palace in the distance and tried to go to it, but she could never reach it.

Returning to Life

Nearly seventy years later, Nico di Angelo, a son of Hades and thus her half-brother, found her in the Fields of Asphodel. He recognized that she was a child of Pluto and brought her back to the world of the living, which was possible due to the Doors of Death being opened. Initially, Nico was in the Underworld to rescue his other sister, Bianca di Angelo, but he was too late as she had tried for rebirth. Nico later states that when he found Hazel, she was just drifting in Asphodel and he could sense that she didn't belong there and that she needed to come back to life.

Once Hazel was restored to life, she began experiencing "blackouts" of her horrible past whenever she tried to think about them. Eventually, she made it to the Wolf House and, consequently, Camp Jupiter, where she was made a guard at the entrance to the Caldecott Tunnel. The blackouts usually happened when she either remembered her past or when she thought too deeply about her old life. Later, after being told to do so by Ella, she pulled Frank Zhang into one of her blackouts, where she replayed the time when she stood before the judges of the Underworld as they decided where she would stay. Afterward, she seems to have no more blackouts. Hazel remembered how Pluto had told Hazel in her past life that a descendant of Neptune would wash away her curse. Initially, she thought that Percy would "wash away" her curse because he was the son of Poseidon. However, she finds out on her quest that Frank is also a descendant of Poseidon and so was not sure who it might be.

The Heroes of Olympus

The Lost Hero

Hazel is remembered by Jason Grace as one of his friends. She knew Jason for about a month before he disappeared, although this is not noted until the second book in the series.

Nico di Angelo

Nico, her half brother

Hazel and Frank Zhang are the two demigods guarding Camp Jupiter's entrance when Percy Jackson defeated the Gorgons. She helped pull Frank Zhang out of the water after the whirlpool Percy created calmed down. After Juno formally introduced the sea demigod and disappeared, Reyna then orders Hazel to take Percy inside the camp to be questioned. Hazel then takes Percy to Octavian, who is revealed to be blackmailing her to get her vote to be a legion leader. She then shows Percy the various temples like Neptune and Pluto where she meets with her brother Nico di Angelo. While talking to Nico she has a "blackout."

She then eats dinner with Dakota, Percy and Frank before the war games (which is like capture the flag at Camp Half-Blood, but with a fortress and there is only one flag). They then proceed to the war game where she, Frank, and Percy are the first ones to penetrate the fortress with the rest of their team following using a special tactic Frank created. They then capture the 'flag' and win the war game, but before they can celebrate Gwen is killed with a weapon that looked like it was Octavian`s weapon after the games ended. With the Doors of Death open, Gwen quickly comes back and there is much confusion. They leave the fortress and are stopped by Mars, Roman god of war, who then claims Frank and gives him a special spear. He gives him a quest and his own written prophecy to go north to the land beyond the gods and free Thanatos, a god of death. Mars picks Percy to go on the quest and Frank picks Hazel. They then go to a senate meeting to decide what to give them for the quest, but due to Octavian, they are given a boat and a few supplies. Hazel isn't too happy about the boat, but they take it.

When they get to Camp Marina, they find the small, old leaky boat which makes her feel even worse. After they get on the boat Hazel has a vision of her past. She is then woken up by Frank. After getting attacked by grain spirits called Karpoi and watching the giant's army go by, she and the boys arrive at Rainbow Organic Foods & Lifestyles, a store owned and run by Iris, the rainbow goddess. While Hazel and Percy make a few Iris-messages Frank battles three monstrous snakes alone, allowing them to leave.

Then they are at the sea again. Eventually, they arrive in Portland, Oregon, and the trio goes to find the blind seer Phineas, a son of Neptune. They find him trying to smack the Harpies with a weed whacker and he then tells them to find a Harpy with red feathers named Ella and give the harpy to him so he can torture her in exchange for the information they desired. After chasing Ella they catch her on the roof of a library and they take her to Phineas. But they had no intention to give the vulnerable harpy to the blind king. Percy gets Gaea to trick Phineas into drinking a vial of Gorgon Blood (one vial heals and the other one is fatal, and Phineas drank poison) and Hazel discovers the location of Alcyoneus.

They return to the boat where she has another blackout, sharing it with Frank. It involves her judgment in the underworld and when she meets Nico and Frank puts his life in her hands by entrusting her with a stick that would snuff out his life if completely burned. They are then woken up and they go find Reyna's sister, Hylla, who is Queen of the Amazons. They find the lair of the Amazons, which is really a front of the online shipping company, Amazon and Percy and Frank are captured. Hazel proceeds to talk with Hylla. She asked her if the Amazons can help the camp. but Queen Hylla declines because her own people are at war with each other due to the arrival of the dead Queen Otrera who has been revived by Gaea. But Hylla agreed to let Hazel and her friends go along with the horse from Hazel's past, Arion, who will only let Hazel ride him. It's also said by Queen Hylla that only the strongest female warrior could ride him, and that person would bring a new era of prosperity to the Amazons.

They then go north to Frank's Grandma Zhang's house. When they arrive, the house is surrounded by Laistrygonians. They talk to his grandma and escape the giants and fly north to Alaska. During the ride, Hazel kisses Percy on the cheek, but just as sisterly love. They stay in Hazel's old house for awhile after getting attacked by Gryphons and take Arion to the home of the giant, Alcyoneus who imprisoned Thanatos. When they get there the threesome split up, Frank frees Thanatos, Hazel takes on the giant, and Percy handles the undead Roman Legion brought back to life by Gaea to assist her son.

Frank Zhang

Frank, her boyfriend

Frank and Hazel are able to defeat Alcyoneus after they drive him to Canada, away from his home territory. They return to Alaska to get Percy who has the eagle of the Twelfth Legion and head back to Camp Jupiter on Arion. Upon arriving, she meets Tyson and Mrs. O'Leary. Then, she heads off into battle.

Once the monsters are defeated, Hazel goes and finds Thanatos and asks him about the escaped souls. He tells her that she is not on his list of escaped souls and believed that maybe Pluto gave her pardon so that she may do some good within the Prophecy of Seven. She also makes her feelings for Frank known and kisses him to show her affection. Afterward, she gathers in the Forum to await the arrival of the campers from Camp Half-Blood on the Argo II.

The Mark of Athena

While arriving at Camp Jupiter on the Argo II, Annabeth Chase saw Percy on the ground with his arms around Frank and Hazel, as if they were old friends. Annabeth, Jason, Piper McLean, and Leo Valdez then enter the Forum where Annabeth worries that she and Percy may have started a relationship. She quickly dismisses the thought, pairing her with Frank instead. After the attack on New Rome, Hazel and Arion cause a distraction to let their friends escape. She later reunites with the others in Utah, where she wonders if Leo is Sammy Valdez. When Leo tells the seven that they need supplies, she accompanies him to the Salt Lake. They soon come across Nemesis where Hazel sees one of her past teachers. Nemesis tells them to find her brother by the Kalends of Juno. She also tells them that unless they stop the giants by the same day that Rome would be destroyed. She then vanishes. Hazel and Leo share many romantic awkward moments until running across Echo and Narcissus. While Leo and Echo distract the cursed boy, Hazel manages to steal a sheet of Celestial bronze with her powers and flees with Leo toward the Argo II.

Hazel is later seen when Piper attempts to get rid of the eidolons, helping to catch Jason after they are banished. She later fans her face and seems flustered after Percy and Annabeth are caught alone together in the stables. Hazel later heads with Piper and Annabeth to Charleston Park where they meet Aphrodite. The goddess tells Hazel to fix her clothes so she could look even more beautiful. The trio is later surrounded by Octavian and Romans, but Percy manages to save them. Hazel, Piper, and Percy stay on board while Annabeth heads into Fort Sumter to rescue Jason, Leo, and Frank, and find the map to help her on her quest. The trio managed to successfully defend the ship by the time the boys came back.

After they make it into the Atlantic Ocean, Hazel shows Leo a flashback of her life. There, she explains that Sammy was her boyfriend and he and Leo look exactly the same. One of Leo's memories take over, and Sammy is revealed to be Leo's great-grandfather and that he met Hera, who told him he won't live to see Hazel's greatest danger. The flashback ends and Leo and Hazel start to talk about what they saw. However, the group is attacked by a skolopendra nicknamed Shrimpzilla, and she tries to help Leo unleash Greek fire to destroy it. Gleeson Hedge then tells the crew that Hazel and Leo were holding hands much to Frank's horror. However, Hazel, Leo, and Frank are taken overboard and land in the underwater city of the ichthyocentaur. Leo explains everything that really happened while Hazel quickly makes friends with the icthyocentaur and they reunite with their friends.

Hazel stays on the ship while Jason and Piper meet Hercules. She is later tied up and taken captive by Chrysaor along with the rest of the crew except Frank. After Percy and Frank defeat him by tricking his crew into thinking Dionysus was on the ship (even though Chyrsaor wasn't convinced, he still had to flee with the rest of his crew), the crew reach Rome, Italy. Hazel, along with Frank and Leo, track Nico di Angelo into the Pantheon. Leo soon uncovers a tunnel that Hazel volunteers to investigate. However, the eidolons attack once again and force Leo and Frank into the tunnel. The trio soon enters a workshop filled with inventions created by Archimedes that Leo becomes fascinated by. Hazel and Frank are soon tasered to unconsciousness by a Taser Ball possessed by an eidolon. Two eidolons possess unworkable machines and threaten to kill Leo with them. Frank wakes up in time to guard Hazel as Leo destroys the eidolons with Archimedes' sphere. Leo sadly tells Hazel that she was tracking Nico by his sword. Hazel, grief-stricken, then asks where Nico could be. Gaea laughs in the trio's faces and shows them that Annabeth is facing her mother's mortal enemy, and Jason, Piper, and Percy are drowning.

Hazel appears again with Leo, Frank, and Coach Hedge as they enter the Colosseum, rescuing Percy, Jason, Piper, and Nico. Leo tells them he had thought of an escape plan. Hazel reunites with Nico, who informs them that the mortal side of the Doors of Death is in The House of Hades. Leo, Hazel, and Frank inform that Gaea had shown them Annabeth was in trouble and they head out to rescue her. The Argo II and its crew arrive at Arachne's lair where Annabeth has barely survived the experience. Jason, Piper, Leo, and Frank secure the Athena Parthenos to the Argo II when Annabeth is dragged into a pit. Hazel desperately warns them to cut the spider silk as Nico tries to save Percy and Annabeth. Percy grabs on to Annabeth as Hazel continues to plead for help. However, Percy makes Nico promise he'll take the four to the House of Hades while he and Annabeth fall into Tartarus.

Hazel, Jason, Piper, Leo, Nico, and Coach Hedge, all aboard the Argo II, then decide to follow Percy's orders and set sail to Eprius, Greece to save them from the House of Hades.

The House of Hades

The Argo II is being attacked by earth spirits (Ourae) who are attacking with boulders. Hazel is almost hit by a boulder but ducks as the mast is hit and tumbles everywhere, along with Nico. Hazel runs to go help Nico up from the debris that are on him. After Hazel tells Leo that they need to leave the mountains, she starts to think of her home, Camp Jupiter, and how much she misses it. The trio then decide that they should let the others sleep and come up with a plan for going around the mountains. Hazel believes that it is Nico and her fault for not being able to go through the mountain because children of Pluto/Hades are not liked by earth spirits. Hazel suggests that they go by sea, but without Percy, it would almost be impossible. After the trio has almost run out of ideas, Hazel prays to her dad for the first time asking him to give them a sign. Hazel then spots something in the distance: Arion. She tells Leo to bring the ship as close to the ground so she can talk to him.

Hazel gets onto Arion and rides into a storm promising the two boys aboard the ship that she will be back soon. As she went into the mist she realizes that it's not just mist, but the Mist that is the supernatural veil that changes what mortals and demigods see. As she slides off Arion's back to walk the rest of the way, Arion instantly runs away, leaving Hazel on her own. Through the fog Hazel sees a figure and calls out hello. She gets a response and realizes that she has met Hecate, the goddess of magic.

Hecate immediately tells Hazel that she is like her mother and that she knew her because she was a fortune-teller who dealt with charms and curses. She proceeds to introduce Hazel to Gale, the weasel, and Hecuba, the Labrador. Hecate shows Hazel three different crossroads and that she must choose which one. Hazel tells her that she doesn't want any of the crossroads because they all feature her friends and home in peril (one showed Camp Jupiter and Camp Half Blood destroyed, one showed the seven trapped in the mountains and one showed Percy and Annabeth getting killed in Tartarus). Hecate gives her a new path which is a secret pass through Italy and a loop round to the House of Hades. Hecate says that Hazel will need to learn how to use the Mist to defeat an enemy. She tells her to practice using and controlling the Mist and when she arrives in Bologna to seek out two dwarfs. Hazel tells Hecate that she's not choosing Hecate's path, but her own.

The goddess and the mist disappear and Hazel is standing in a field with Arion. They ride back to the ship and Hazel tells Nico and Leo that she met Hecate. She tells Leo to set sail for the new coordinates and that they need to get their quickly to make up for lost time. Nico continues to question Hazel with what she saw, but refuses to tell him, afraid that the rest of the team will fall apart.

On July 5th, Hazel had spent the night guarding the ship through the Appenines. The next day, Hazel ate breakfast with Jason, Leo, Nico, and her boyfriend, Frank. Hazel discussed the House of Hades with the others and saving Percy and Annabeth. When the ship suddenly lurched, Nico fell against the wall, and Hazel ran to help him. Hazel watched the video of Piper and Coach Hedge being captured, and Hazel recognized that they were dwarves. Hazel yelled that she would take care of Nico when Leo ran to chase the dwarves.

Later, when the ship landed in Venice, Hazel offered to go with Nico and Frank to find The Black House, relieving a creeped out Frank. The three walked through the city, with Hazel holding Frank’s hand. Hazel also encouraged Frank to let Nico talk about his past, since he needed to practice talking more. When they made it near the house, the three were attacked by Katobleps and Nico and Hazel attacked the monsters from the side street, where they were chased by them. Hazel was gassed right in the face by one of the monsters, because Nico wasn’t fast enough to protect her. Hazel’s lips had a tinge of green, and was shivering.

Triptolemus led the two and Hazel in the house, where Frank begged for Hazel to be cured. Unfortunately, Trip didn’t want to cure her because she was a child of Pluto. He eventually gave in after Frank killed all of the katobleps in Venice. Hazel woke up confused and was instantly hugged by Frank. Hazel was the first person to notice that Frank grew 2 or 3 inches, and Hazel told him that he looked amazing and more handsome and distinguished. After they left, Hazel said that the experience was very strange. She asked if Frank was okay, making Frank want to cry due to the kindness. Nico and Hazel looked at each other in bewilderment after learning that Frank killed all of the katobleps in the city. Hazel kissed Frank’s cheek, but realized that something changed in Frank.

Two days after leaving Venice, Hazel was very seasick as the Argo II sailed down the Adriatic. Gale, Hecate’s pet, appeared in her cabin one night scampering between her feat. Hazel screamed, making all of the campers ask if she was okay, with Leo trying hard not to make a joke. Hazel decided to visit Coach Hedge that morning to see if he could talk to Gale, but walked in on him iris messaging Mellie. He said Gale said many rude things and slammed the door. Hazel wondered what was wrong with him, since she never saw him shaken up before. Hazel also had nightmares during those nights of her past and her visions from Hecate, and Confused as to how she would control the mist. She was also worried about Nico, who was acting more secluded than usual. Hazel also realized Frank didn’t change. Hazel and Frank talked, and she thanked him for being nice to Nico.

Suddenly, the ship lurched, because they ran into the bandit, Sciron. Hazel met the rest of the crew to discuss the situation. Hazel was very shocked when she saw how big the turtle was. Hazel summoned Arion and used him to run around the monsters head with Piper, using her Charmspeak. Hazel stabbed at his head while Piper bounced food off of his eyeballs. When Sciron appeared, Hazel read the note he gave them and realized that it was a robbery. Hazel decided to go meet Sciron with Jason, and also summoned his sword from half a mile underwater for him.

Hazel, Gale, and Jason went to meet the bandit while climbing a 200 foot cliff. Hazel wished she had been with Frank, Piper, Nico, or Leo instead of Jason, since she couldn’t get a read on Jason. She was also still mad at him when he was ready to leave Nico in Rome to die. She also didn’t know what he was capable of. Hazel couldn’t talk about this to anyone, since all of them admired him as a leader. She was very surprised when Jason told her that he believed that she could control the mist, and that Hecate picked her for a reason. The two arrived at the top and met Sciron, and was instantly nervous as he talked to them. Hazel got nervous, making centuries worth of treasure rise from the ground. When Sciron wanted to take the Athena Parthenos, Hazel told him that Gaea would kill him as soon as she rose. Sciron let them keep the statue as long as they wash his feet.

Hazel remembered how Sciron killed his victims, and told Jason about it. Hazel came up with a plan to save them both by controlling the mist. Hazel decided to clean his right foot, and when Jason was “swallowed” by the turtle, Hazel pretended to be outraged. Hazel manipulated the mist to be kicked away from the ledge of the cliff, and landed safely in the grass, then had Sciron be eaten by the turtle instead. Jason was proud of Hazel, but Hazel passed out, and saw Pluto again. Pluto said that she was proud of her and told her that she would face Pasiphaë in the House of Hades. Pluto then told her that he would let her stay alive and not return her to the dead.

After Piper and Hazel fought Sciron together, they’d talked together a lot. They shared stories, complained about the guys, and cried about Annabeth. Hazel told a Piper about controlling the mist and she offered to train her in swordfighting. When the ship arrived in Croatia, Hazel discussed with the crew about Jason’s dream of Reyna. Jason and the others were also nervous around Hazel after what she did to Sciron, because of the serious magic she pulled, and how Pluto appearing to her was a bad omen for the Romans. Hazel also learned about the legend behind Diocletian’s Scepter. Hazel also had no idea why Jason would idolize Diocletian.

Two days after, Hazel was very seasick and Frank had to help her walk down the stairs. Nico kissed her on the forehead and Piper hoped she was okay.

Hazel later ended up with the ship on the northern coast of Africa, and defended the ship against Venti. Later, Hazel was very excited when she saw Leo again after being blasted in the sky by Khione, and kissed him on the cheek, saying that she thought he was dead. Hazel ate food with the crew in Malta and told Leo everything that happened. Hazel also wondered where Leo got his new clothes from. Hazel was the first one to realize Gaea’s forces were entering the Doors of Death.

On the way to the House of Hades, Hazel and Leo had less tension between the two and talked more comfortably with each other, with Leo not giving wistful glances at her. Hazel could tell that Leo met someone and told Frank that. Piper and Hazel went to get mooring ropes and Hazel pecked Frank on the cheek before she went. Later, Hazel and Frank were pulled aside by Leo and Hazel reluctantly gave Leo Frank’s firewood, so Leo could fix it. Hazel agreed that what Leo did was awesome, but she was worried that something bad would happen to Frank. When they arrived in Epirus, Hazel explained that the River Acheron flowed from the Underworld to the mainland.

Hazel and the crew walked into the House of Hades and distributed the barley cakes to the crew. Hazel also destroyed a rock, saving the crew from a cave in. As they went deeper into the 1st level and into the 2nd, Hazel’s underground sense became fuzzy as the dead became stronger than the living. Hazel and the crew walked into a tunnel that was unstable, and Hazel told the others to step exactly where she does to protect them. Eventually, as they entered the third level, Nico, Frank, Piper, and Jason got surrounded by monsters and Leo and Hazel raced into a tunnel free of monsters. Frank told Hazel and Leo to go save Percy and Annabeth, and the entrance to the tunnel collapsed, separating the groups.

When the tunnel collapsed, Hazel sobbed, screamed, cursed, and punched the rocks. Leo reassured Hazel that Frank would be okay. Hazel then apologized to Leo for everything with Sammy and accidentally leading him on, but Leo said it was okay and that things happened for a reason, and that he hoped she and Frank would be happy together. Hazel realized that Leo had changed and realized that he was a good friend. Hazel asked who he met while he was gone and Leo promised to tell her later.

Hazel and Leo went down the most dangerous tunnel, and met Pasiphaë. Pasiphaë taunted Hazel and Hazel saw the giant Clytius, the bane of Hecate, waiting for her. Hazel realized that Pasiphaë reminded Hazel of her own mother, who thought that she was a monster and a punishment, just like how Pasiphaë thought of her son, the Minotaur. Pasiphaë created an illusion, where she thought that the tunnels were splitting everywhere except forward. Pasiphaë then recreated the Labyrinth, which Hazel noticed. Hazel helped Leo break out of the illusion by having her and Leo jump across a pit that was actually only 3 inches wide. Hazel created another tunnel filled with poison, and they ran through it. They were almost eaten by snakes, but Hazel imagined a chute and slid into a cavern, falling onto Pasiphaë. They arrived at the Doors, and Hazel taunted Pasiphaë, having her fall into a bottomless pit that didn’t exist.

The doors opened, and Hazel cried when she saw Percy and Annabeth, limp as corpses. When Clytius stepped on Percy and covered them with fog, Hazel begged him to let them go. Hazel could tell that Annabeth’s life force was waning when Clytius spoke from her mouth. Leo was covered with the poisonous fog, and Clytius said that Leo couldn’t defeat her, but Hecate appeared, saying that Hazel had proven her worthy. Hazel and Hecate worked together to defeat Clytius, and kept Leo in the mist, away from the black smoke. Hazel screamed, having gems go towards Clytius. Hecate was impressed with Hazel, saying that she had tricks even she couldn’t teach her. Clytius accused Hecate of not being someone to rely on, but Hecate told Hazel that it was her crossroads: she must choose. Hazel charged at Clytius with her spatha, and destroyed the Doors of Death. Jason, Piper, Nico, and Frank arrived, and they, with the help of Hecate, burned Clytius alive. Hecate said goodbye to her, and Hazel was angry that she didn’t thank her and say good work, but Hecate told her to get her friends out of the House, and that she is looking for gratitude in the wrong places.

As soon as Hazel defeated Clytius, Frank rushed to her side, and hugged her lightly, since her ribs were broken. She coaxed Nico towards her when she realized he was alone, and he kissed her on the forehead, saying that she made Pluto/Hades proud. Hazel was more grateful than ever to have Nico there, but wondered what had gone on with him in the past few weeks. Hazel, with the help of Nico, shadow travelled everyone back to the mainland. Hazel was very impressed when she found out that Frank was promoted to Praetor by Jason, and kissed him. When they got back, Reyna had arrived, and they all ate dinner with her. Hazel didn’t know what to think of Reyna dropping by, but Hazel boasted to Reyna everything that Frank did. Hazel offered to lead Reyna and Hedge through the Labyrinth with the Athena Parthenos, but Annabeth said it wouldn’t fit in the maze.

Soon after they went to the House of Hades, Hazel immediately went to Leo’s cabin and told him to tell her everything about what happened when he was gone. Leo told her everything, and Hazel went back to his cabin that evening and asked what she looked like. She drew a picture of Calypso out of charcoal, that looked just like her. Later, Hazel used the Mist to disguise Jason as a man named Iros and Piper and Annabeth as his handmaidens. Hazel had also been teaching Piper swordfighting.

A few days later, Hazel ate breakfast with the rest of the Argo II crew and sat next to Frank, with their cereal bowls covering a map of Greece and Frank’s hand on hers. Leo later squeezed in between them. Hazel discussed subduing Nike/Victoria with the others, and decided to go to Olympia with Percy, Frank, and Leo, since none of their godly parents antagonized each other. Hazel said that she wished that they weren’t going through the Pelponessian sea, but Jason reminded her that Juno said it was suicide.

The four went to Olympia, and Frank and Hazel scouted the ruins while Leo and Percy searched at the museum. When Hazel and Frank got back, the four looked at the ruins and she punched Leo when he didn’t think anything there was impressive. Hazel also made fun of how Pelops got his wife when Frank told her. Later, Hazel rolled her eyes when Leo and Percy tried to win Nike over with their stupid senses of humor. When Hazel met the goddess, she had trouble controlling Arion, and reminded the goddess that she is confused, and the demigod civil war is making her aspects clash. Hazel tried to convince Nike that Gaea was the true enemy, but Nike turned it into a battle with Greeks versus Romans, Hazel and Frank versus Percy and Leo. The four had five minutes to prepare, and Hazel told them about the Nikai. Hazel got the idea to pretend to fight to neutralize the Nikai, then raise the labyrinth from the ground. They fought, and Hazel fell but got caught by Percy. Hazel also got her jeans cut and her leg bleeding, and Frank fed her Ambrosia after.

Later, when Frank and Piper got back from Pylos, Hazel met everyone for a meeting on the foredeck, where she asked about Piper’s visions. Hazel also killed the mood in the meeting, when she said that there isn’t always a way to survive, since she died years ago. A few days later, Hazel got extremely seasick when Polybotes and Kymopoleia attacked the ship, saying that she hated the ocean, and was shocked when Jason was out of bed, since he was injured.

Three days later, the Argo II landed in the island of Mykonos, where Hazel got gelato from Percy. Leo took Frank and Hazel to see Apollo and Artemis at Delos. Hazel rode on the back of Arion with Leo while Frank turned into an eagle to fly. Hazel thought that Delos was eerie, since she couldn’t sense any ghosts or mortal souls on the island. Hazel also explained to Frank why Apollo and Artemis didn’t look like twins. Artemis told Hazel about how many people gave their lives to protect the Athena Parthenos from Orion, Hazel immediately asked if Nico was okay, but Artemis reassured her that he was. Hazel and Frank went to talk to Artemis as she told them about the Twelfth Legion Fulminata, while Leo went to talk to Apollo. Hazel learned about the onagers Octavian was using to attack Camp Half-Blood, and his monster allies.

Hazel waited with Frank at the docks of Delos for Leo, where they learned about the conversation between Apollo and Leo. In return, Hazel told Leo what she learned from Artemis. Leo ended up telling Frank and Hazel his plan to sacrifice himself for the crew and taking the Physician's Cure, and a tear came down her cheek. Leo told Hazel that she had to cover for him, that Sammy Valdez could tell she was going to be special, and that our whole lives had been leading to it. Hazel sobbed and hugged him, and was hugged by Frank too. Hazel agreed that she hated the plan, but reluctantly did what Leo said. The next day, Hazel asked Leo if he wanted her to meet Asclepius with him, but Leo declined. Hazel used the Mist to give a fake vial of the Physician's Cure to Piper that night at dinner.

The next morning, Hazel and the crew met Kekrops belowdeck. Hazel talked to the king and asked him what brought him to the ship. Hazel also stopped Percy and Leo’s argument about geminus. Annabeth also made a plan with Frank and Hazel. Later, Hazel went with Frank, Leo, and Jason aboveground to the Parthenon, since Hazel would be killed if she went underground. Hazel used the mist to disguise Percy and Annabeth into Earthborns so they wouldn’t be caught by the Gigantes. Hazel, Frank, Jason, and Arion surprise attacked the giants to save the others. When the blood of Olympus was spilled, Hazel, Arion, and Hades defeated Alcyoneus together. When they made it to Camp Half-Blood, Hazel fought monsters with the Fifth Cohort.

After the battle, Hazel met with the rest of the Seven and Nico to discuss Leo. Hazel asked Piper to show everyone the Cure and when it was nothing, Hazel and Frank, sobbing, explained everything to them. They were all, except for Nico, mad at Hazel at first, but it was hard to be mad at her while Hazel was crying, and they all agreed that it was something Leo would’ve done. Hazel could feel Leo’s death, so she and Nico knew there was no going back with him.

Hazel spent a few days at Camp Half-Blood with Nico, sharing the Hades' Cabin together. One night, Frank visited Hazel and the two talked together in hushed tones. When Nico told Frank to be good to Hazel, Hazel asked if he was threatening Frank. When Frank left, Hazel kissed him on the cheek, and told him that she would see him in the morning. Hazel was also embarrassed when Nico said that he would be the flower boy at her and Frank’s wedding. After Frank left, Hazel told Nico that he will visit Camp Jupiter and that she was promoted to Centurion of the Fifth Cohort. Hazel thanked Nico for the person she had become. Hazel and Nico then discussed Leo’s death, and Hazel asked Nico if she felt his death. Hazel blamed herself for what happened, and told Nico that, and he reassured her. Hazel said that she wished he hadn’t died alone, and she broke down, and Nico held her as she cried herself to sleep. He tucked her in and kissed her on the forehead.

The next morning, Hazel left with Reyna, Frank, and the other Romans.

Percy Jackson's Greek Heroes

Right after finishing his narration of this book, Percy reveals that after the events of The Blood of Olympus, he, Hazel, and the rest of the Seven started the tradition of monthly Argo II reunion parties, and he is quite worried about being late to the current one.

Between the Series

Several days after the deaths of Gaea and Leo, a parchment scroll with a holographic message, sent from the resurrected Leo, came fluttering into Camp Half-Blood on the wind. Hazel and Frank, while angry at Leo for his long absence, are extremely relieved to learn that he is alive.

It can also be assumed that Hazel rarely visits her brother Nico, as the describes her and Frank being busy "doing the Twelfth Legion thing” at Camp Jupiter.

The Chalice of the Gods

Percy mentions Hazel when trudging along the banks of the River Elisson, remembering the time the two of them and Frank were evading basilisks in California.

The Trials of Apollo

The Hidden Oracle

Hazel is not present at Camp Half-Blood when the depowered Apollo and Meg McCaffrey arrive, so Nico explains where his sister and the rest of the Seven are now, while showing Leo's holographic message.

The Dark Prophecy

Leo mentions the daughter of Pluto, saying it would be good to see her again.

The Burning Maze

Leo mentions Hazel when telling Apollo and the others that she survived Caligula’s assault on Camp Jupiter.

The Tyrant's Tomb

When she and Lavinia Asimov stand sentry, she lets her go for a while. She later meets up with her, Apollo, Meg McCaffrey, and Don when they are taking the body of Jason Grace to Camp Jupiter and are attacked by two Eurynomos. They fight them off and one tells her it’s master will allow her and Frank’s skeletons to serve him. She then collapses part of the tunnel with quartz and cries and scolds the son of Jupiter’s corpse when she realizes who it is, having seen his death in a nightmare days ago. She solemnly helps the others carry the coffin to camp. She and the others bring Jason’s coffin to Camp and inform praetors: Frank and Reyna.

During Jason’s funeral, she and the rest of the fifth cohort act as the honor guard. As they are about to light the pyre Lupa arrives, surprisingly everyone including her. After a quest to find Tarquin’s tomb is approved she volunteers to lead it, joining Apollo, Meg, and Lavinia. She complains about Frank wanting to go on the quest and what he pulled during the battle a few days ago. She explains her curse to Meg and that she has more control over it since dating Frank. She tells the other to go about there business for the afternoon and to meet up in the Field of Mars at sunset. She, Meg, and Lavinia arrive to see Apollo talking with Frank, she speaks with the son of Mars before her group sets out.

Tyrant's Tomb Quest

Hazel leading the quest to Tarquin’s Tomb

Along the way she talks with Apollo about Frank’s actions during the attack and he tells her everything he can about Tarquin. They reach Tilden Park and she and Meg sence something evil underground. When they figure out what the numbers mean, she writes it on the tile and they enter. She send a pair of Skeleton Warriors away and they move on to the throne room. Tarquin explains that he will attack alongside the emperors and turns his attention to the daughter of Pluto and her group. They charge and she takes out Caelius and two more Eurynomos. The daughter of Pluto then collapses a wall behind Tarquin and the four escape with Meg’s help. When they reach a river she senses about a dozen pursuers and Lavinia goes to hold them off after pointing them back to camp. She and Meg make it back to camp with an unconscious Apollo.

Two days later she and Dakota learn of the capabilities and number of the emperor’s Greek Fire canons. She calms down the fifth by saying at least they now know what Triumvirate Holdings is capable of. As she walks with Apollo and Meg she senses an aura of death around him. She then sees Don and Lavinia arguing on a bridge and tells them to stop but they ignore her. She leaves Apollo to teach archery to the Fifth Cohort.

The following day she drives a red pickup truck to Reyna, Apollo, and Meg to use to get to Sutro Tower. Reyna comments how she has improved by not hitting Terminus. That night during the assalt she aided the first through fourth cohorts while riding Arion. When Terminus warns them zombies are swarming New Rome from the sewers. She takes Apollo and Meg to Temple Hill to help Tyson and Ella perform the ritual. The girls drop him off and go to New Rome to help.

Later as she and Arion fight a hoard of zombies, she meets Apollo and Meg and, after they inform her of Frank’s sacrifice, sends Arion to find him. They reach the bookstore to find Tarquin interrogating Aristophanes about the Sibylline Books. She attacks the undead king and moments later Diana arrives to finish him off. She is shocked when Arion returns with a living Frank. They rush him to a medical tent and she and Apollo stay at his bedside and theorize about how he survived. When the son of Mars wakes up the daughter of Pluto hugs him.

A few days later during a senate meeting, she is chosen to replace Reyna as praetor after she resigns from the legion to join the Hunters of Artemis (which Frank Zhang disapproved of), she accepts and has Lavinia replace her as centurion of the fifth cohort.

In the morning she and Frank say their goodbyes to Apollo and Meg.

The Tower of Nero

After becoming a god again, Apollo visits Camp Jupiter where Frank and Hazel have become the most respected and efficient praetors the Twelfth Legion has ever had. In record time, they have inspired a rebuilding effort in New Rome, repaired the damage from the Battle of San Francisco Bay and started a recruitment drive with Lupa's wolves to bring in new demigods from the wild. To Apollo's surprise, at least twenty new demigods have been brought in this way since his departure.

Frank and Hazel give Apollo a tour of the camp, pointing out their additions which Hazel describes being plated with gold and completely over the top. Frank adds that as far as they can tell, Hazel's curse is officially broken and they have done an augury at Pluto's shrine that came up favorable. Hazel can now summon jewels and precious metals and use or spend them without casting any curses. Hazel reassures Apollo that they won't abuse that power and will only use it to improve the camp and honor the gods. Hazel pointedly tells Frank that they won't be using it for anything tacky or yachts and airplanes. Hazel becomes annoyed when Frank plays with his praetor's cloak, turning it into a sweater wrap.

Appearance

Hazel is of Louisiana Creole descent with shoulder-length curly cinnamon brown hair and gold eyes. She is marked with a glyph, the letters SPQR, and one stripe for one year of service that she received only a few weeks before Percy arrived. Frank and Leo consider her to be very pretty, while Percy says that Hazel's mother looks just like Hazel, saying Marie Levesque was "beautiful." Percy also describes Hazel as being "darker-skinned," and when Hazel is describing her mother later on she mentions that they had the "same dark complexion, brown as a roasted coffee bean."

Also, when patrolling Frank's grandmother's house, Frank talks about how Hazel wore this shirt and jacket, "that made her skin look as warm as cocoa." She is toned and fit and is the shortest of the seven demigods, though she is also the youngest, in stark contrast to Frank Zhang, the tallest of the seven and third oldest.

Personality

Hazel is bright and outgoing with a love for creativity and horseback riding, but has a dislike for boating and curses. Percy states that she was a great comfort to him and Frank, at times even saying that she seemed confident. Percy also describes her as being very mature for her age, although he felt a little uncomfortable when he started depending on her for comfort, but was glad she was there. Hazel tends to ignore others at times for her own preferences. For example, she carries a cavalry sword while not owning a horse to ride into battle on and she originally didn't want to like Frank because everyone at Camp Jupiter said they would end up together.

She feels a massive amount of guilt over releasing Alcyoneus, and thinks it's her responsibility to bring him down. Because of this, Percy initially states that she seems to have a 'deep sadness', despite her easygoing personality. Hazel is initially afraid of her own abilities. She constantly tries to keep others away from her gems, worried that they will be hurt by them; and becomes shaken if anyone comes near them as a result.

She seems to have internalised her mother's past view of her as a 'cursed child', as she believes her abilities are dangerous, and feels that she doesn't belong at camp Jupiter. She tries to hide her past as much as she can, believing others would blame her or even see her as monstrous if they found out that she released Alcyoneus. However, she eventually starts to open up to Frank and Percy during their quest to Alaska, sharing her burdens and realising that they trust her even despite knowing about her past. This leads to her feeling more grounded; as she states she doesn't feel like she's divided between the past and present.

During her time on the Argo II, she is shown to be very protective and defensive of those she cares about, as she becomes very upset when Jason and Leo question Nico's intentions, leading her to mistrust Jason. She is also stated by Leo to have a lot of nervous energy, and often summons metals when she is thinking.

After Annabeth and Percy fall into Tartarus, Hazel feels a sense of guilt for not being able to stop them from getting away from them, especially as she looked up to Percy and felt that both he and Annabeth united the Argo II. After this, she feels the need to take more initiative in the Argo II, becoming increasingly determined to unite the group and keep them safe. This leads her to meeting Hecate, who offers her a limited number of potential paths that the group can take. She refuses the three options that were offered as they won’t protect her friends, resulting in her being offered a new potential path. She responds boldly to Hecate by telling her she is forming her own pathway.

She also starts to attempt to use the mist. While initially fruitless in trying to transform various objects and form illusions, she uses her past and experiences with ghosts to realize that the mist affects what people want to see. She also reflects on the nature of wealth and its similarities with the mist, using her past and embracing her lineage as a child of Pluto for the first time. Her resourcefulness here allows her to further develop her skills with the mist, which she uses when encountering Pasiphae. Her encounter with Pasiphae reminds her of her mother, and she reflects that no child should be treated as if they are a monster, and this is why she views the minotaur as a victim of the story.

Towards the end of the Blood of Olympus, Hazel has become more confident, especially with her abilities with the mist, and Nico tells her that this is something she did herself.

Hazel can be easily embarrassed, such as through Frank's clumsiness and his attempts to comfort her. Hazel is extremely loyal to her friends and treats them as family, as shown through her friendship with Frank and Percy, as well as the rest of the Fifth Cohort and when she gave up Elysium to go to the Fields of Asphodel so that her mother wouldn't go to the Fields of Punishment. She is also very affectionate, having kissed Percy, Frank, Leo and Nico on the cheek multiple times though most of the time, she gives them sisterly kisses.

Abilities

As a child of the Big Three and one of the seven, Hazel is an extremely powerful demigod with power only rivaling that of other children of the Big Three.

  • ADHD: Like most demigods, Hazel possesses inborn supernatural battle reflexes and senses that she uses to analyze the fighting style of her opponent.
  • Fighting Skills: Hazel is a very skilled user of her Spatha, able to defeat many trained legionnaires in The Son of Neptune during the war games, despite them having more experience than her, she was also able to hold her own to an extent while fighting Clytius by herself when it took 5 demigods and a goddess to defeat him, although she was very nearly killed. She was able to hold her own well with Alcyoneus a giant that is meant to oppose Hades/Pluto and his children, and ultimately defeat him with some help from Frank Zhang and Arion in The Son of Neptune. Hazel was able to fight off these two very strong and ancient giants by herself, therefore, albeit she wasn't as skilled as either and had help in their defeat. In the Second Giant War Hazel is able to hold her own very well against multiple giants, ultimately defeating them with the help of Arion and Hecate. Also, Hazel is able to teach swordsmanship to Piper and train her to also become a skilled swordswoman.
  • Dyslexia: Hazel's brain is "hard-wired" for Latin.
  • French (limited): Hazel speaks Louisiana French, having studied it in school, though she is not fluent. However, her French is so very different from Frank's Canadian French, that they can barely communicate.
  • Superhuman Strength : Being a demigod, Hazel is stronger than the average mortal.
  • Superhuman Agility : Being a demigod, Hazel is more agile than the regular human being and has much faster reactions.
  • Superhuman Durability : Being a demigod, a Hazel is more durable than the average mortal, as shown as she survived being hit by a giant, and shook off being hit by one of the strongest giants while traveling at supersonic speed on her horse, Arion.
  • Skilled Trainer: Hazel is shown to be a skilled trainer, as she trained Piper at sword fighting. Piper was able to even go toe to toe with the giant, Periboia and fight the giant, Mimas, because of Hazel's training.
  • Mist Manipulation: According to Hecate in The House of Hades, Hazel has a great potential to manipulate the Mist. Her mother had this ability as well, but Hazel's potential is even greater. She has begun to master this new skill, having successfully tricked Sciron and even defeated the more experienced and powerful sorceress Pasiphaë. By The Blood of Olympus, Hazel was capable of conjuring up persuasive illusions, making Percy and Annabeth appear as Earthborn giants, and make Jason appear as an old man.
    • Mnemokinesis: As she has the ability to use the Mist, Hazel can manipulate memories.
    • Mist Travel: During the final battle with the Giants in The Blood of Olympus, Hazel displayed the ability to disappear into the Mist and appear again to strike the enemies.[1]
    • Mist Placement: During her battle with Clytius Hazel has displayed the ability to use the Mist to take objects that are far away from her, and place them right behind her seen in The House of Hades when Hazel used the Mist to take a half dead Percy and Annabeth and over powered Leo who were being choked to death in a dark black smoky mist by Clytius and placed them behind her. She has also displayed this ability when she put the bandit Sciron in front of the cliff, making Jason able to kick him off. [2], [3]
  • Leadership: Hazel is shown to be a great leader as she is a praetor of the Fifth Cohort.
  • Art: Hazel is a particularly gifted and talented artist, as she was able to recreate what Calypso looked like with only Leo's description.

Being a daughter of Pluto, Hazel is a child of the Big Three, therefore an extremely powerful demigod, she has the following abilities:

  • Geokinesis: Hazel can find any underground caves, tunnels, trapdoors, and change their shapes to suit her needs or destroy them. She was able to find a secret underground tunnel during the War Games in The Son of Neptune. In The House of Hades, Hazel was able to bend the tunnels she fell through back towards Pasiphaë.
  • Chrimatakinesis (limited to precious metals and gems): Hazel can control valuable gems and metals.
    • Ferrokinesis (limited to precious metals): Hazel can sense and summon precious metals from under the ground as well as manipulate them, and change it's shape.
    • Sensing Riches: She can also use this ability to sense precious metals or materials, such as gold, silver and diamonds from under the Earth. In The Mark of Athena, Hazel is able to sense the Stygian Iron of Nico's Sword
    • Summoning and Controlling Riches: She can summon and control tons of precious metal and jewels simultaneously, as shown when she fought with the Amazons named Lulu and Doris; leaving them buried in a mountain of jewelry and when she lifted all the gold in the Gryphon's nests. She had even summoned a dozen of rubies at the giant, Clytius with so much force that it punctured his metal armor and even staggered the giant and wounded him.
    • Telumkinesis (limited): Because Hazel has her Ferrokinesis, she has some control over weapons but not as much as control as a child of Ares would have. This was shown when she summoned Jason's golden gladius from the ocean.
  • Death Sense: Much like her half-brother Nico, Hazel states in The Son of Neptune that she can sense death, or a creature that has died like the basilisks that Gray killed. She was also able to sense Gray, an undead warrior that returned to the Earth after it had killed the monsters, before she saw it. Leo also noted in The Mark of Athena that Hazel and Nico shared a look likely comparing children of Hades/Pluto "death radar" notes when Percy and Annabeth fell into Tartarus. However, her sense seems to be somewhat weaker than Nico's, as only the latter was able to tell when Percy and Annabeth had approached the Doors of Death in The House of Hades. Her powers were enough however to allow her to see and sense the powers of the Doors of Death which only Nico and Jason were able to do.
  • Shadow Travel: In The House of Hades, she and Nico are able to shadow-travel themselves and six other demigods out of the Necromanteion and back to the surface, despite Hazel stating that she had never tried to shadow-travel before that instance. However, it is assumed that shadow travel takes away a lot of her energy.
  • Flashbacks: Hazel is able to look back at events from her life before she died. At first she is unable to control when these flashbacks would happen as they would be triggered by thinking about the past too long. Eventually she gained the ability to control them after having shared a flashback with Frank Zhang in The Son of Neptune. She has some control over what she sees after this and is able to show Leo Valdez a memory of Sammy Valdez from her past in The Mark of Athena, but is then taken into Leo's memory, something she didn't expect. Nico thinks this happened because of her time in the Underworld, but it is still unclear how this power works.
  • Necromancy (possibly): It is unknown whether she can actually utilise this ability but since most other children of Hades were able to summon and control the dead, it is assumed Hazel can too.
  • Osteokinesis: Hazel is able to control bones, as she was able to send a pair of Skeleton Warriors away just by willing it when she and three others where scouting out Tarquin’s Tomb.

Magical Items

  • Spatha: Hazel fights with an Imperial Gold spatha, a Roman cavalry sword.
  • Frank's Stick: In The Son of Neptune, Frank trusted the daughter of Pluto with his life line which she has kept for most of their quest to Athens. However, after Leo gave Frank a fire-proof bag to keep the stick in, Hazel gives it back to Frank, feeling a little disappointed in having to give it back.
  • Reyna's cloak: After Hazel becomes the Praetor of the Twelfth Legion, she is given Reyna's old cloak.
  • Praetor badge: After Hazel becomes the Praetor of the Twelfth Legion, she is given Reyna's old badge of office.

Relationships

Love Interests

Frank Zhang

Frank Zhang, her boyfriend.

Frank and Hazel were good friends in The Son of Neptune, but they both secretly had crushes on each other. Hazel heart skipped a beat every time she saw Frank, which irritated her, and went nuts every time Frank is around, which she hadn't felt since Sammy. Hazel also got irritated because the entire Camp teased her and said she and Frank should date, because they were the two biggest losers at camp, which made Hazel determined not to like him. However, Frank was the only one at Camp nice to Hazel and didn't treat her like a disease, which Hazel was grateful for but thought that if he knew about her past, he wouldn't be as nice to her. As for Frank, he really liked Hazel and thought she was nice and good looking. He was very attracted to her and wanted to put his arms around her and make her warm, and thought she always looked good, even in her war helmet. Hazel was Franks only friend and he even almost told her about his firewood secret. Frank also was grateful for Hazel when she stood for Percy Jackson. And at dinner, Frank bragged to Percy about Hazel got her first stripe, and made her sound like a hero.

Hazel and Frank later went on the quest to Alaska along with Percy. While on the boat, Frank attempted to help Hazel with her seasickness and got a saltine, but it snapped in his big fingers and crumbs went everywhere, making Hazel laugh. When Hazel got a blackout, Frank became very worried and panicked, and was relieved when she woke up. Frank was also worried that he never noticed her blackouts before and asked if it was for a medical reason, and held her hand, which surprised Hazel, but pleasantly. After Percy left to get food, Frank told Hazel that he realized she was born in a different time and was from the Underworld. Hazel wanted to cry, not because she was upset, but because she was relieved he wasn't treating her like a zombie. Frank reassured Hazel that she was alive now, and intended to keep her that way. Hazel said she didn't deserve a friend like him, and Frank said she was a great friend and not the only one who had secrets. Before Frank could explain, Hazel was dragged away by Karpoi. However, even after, even though Hazel was the one Frank trusted most, Frank hesitated to tell her, because he worried he wouldn’t want to take his burden.

As the quest went on, Hazel began seeing Frank as having more courage than she realized, and the one looking out for her, which was a nice change for Hazel, since usually she was the one looking out for Frank and keeping him out of trouble. Frank eventually encouraged Hazel to tell the story of her past, and that she shouldn’t carry her problems alone, but if she didn’t want to, it was okay. Hazel eventually told everything, except for Sammy, to Frank, Ella, and Percy, and Frank held her hand, saying that Hazel was brave and that he could never be as brave as Hazel. Hazel trusted Frank enough to pull him into one of her blackouts, and Frank saw where she went after death. As Frank and Hazel sat in the Fields of Asphodel, Frank said she deserved Elysium, and he was angry her life was taken away from her at such a young age. Frank finally told Hazel about his lifeline, and Hazel questioned why he would trust her, being a daughter of Pluto, but he insisted and said she was his best friend, and he trusted her. Frank and Hazel became more attracted to each other, and after Hazel rescued Arion, Frank said she was very incredible and Hazel wanted to kiss him right then and there. And when they were at Grandma Zhang’s house, Hazel made Frank his favorite breakfast, astonishing him that Hazel would do that. Later, Frank thanked Hazel for not hating him and making him breakfast, and Hazel confessed she was impressed when Frank summoned a skeleton the night before, shocking him. Frank was later slightly jealous when Hazel gave Percy a sisterly kiss on the way to Anchorage. But finally, after Frank defeated Alcyoneus, Hazel gave him a kiss on the lips, starting their relationship. Hazel also began carrying Frank’s firewood.

In The Mark of Athena, Frank and Hazel’s relationship became a little strained, due to Leo Valdez being on the ship, and being attracted to Hazel. Frank was skeptical of Leo due to looking like Sammy, and scowled when Hazel went off with Leo on Arion. Frank and Leo would keep showing off to impress Hazel the next day in Kansas, and before Frank could insult Leo, Hazel stepped in and promised to help Frank scout for Roman Eagles. and Frank became furious at Leo when he and Hazel stood holding hands for awhile, because Frank thought he had feelings for Hazel. However, Frank and Hazel still cared about each other, and Frank promised to rescue Nico di Angelo for Hazel's sake, and became furious at Jason and Leo when they were suspicious of him. Frank wanted to go comfort Hazel right away but Piper told Frank to wait a few minutes so she could cool off. Hazel also tried not to laugh when Frank couldn’t get the Chinese finger trap off of him. Hazel would also talk to Leo and tell him that his fire made Frank nervous. The strain in their relationship ended after Hazel and Frank went to Rome with Leo, and Frank and Leo's relationship mended.

In The House of Hades, Frank and Hazel are as close as ever, and Frank was grateful for Hazel when she offered to go with him to Venice so he wouldn't be alone with Nico. Frank was also very angry when Hazel was poisoned and threatened Triptolemus to heal her. Frank was determined to kill the Katobleps to heal her, and when she woke up, Frank tackled her in a hug. When Frank’s appearance changed after getting the Blessing of Mars, Hazel said he looked amazing, but when Hazel kissed Frank, she had a sad look in her eyes. Hazel worries that Franks personality would change, but after a few days, she realized he was the same old Frank she knew and loved, and was in awe and impressed after he defeated the katobleps in Venice. Hazel also wished that Frank was with her instead of Jason when defeating Sciron. Later, after they went through the House of Hades, Frank ran and hugged her. They were both worried about each other’s injuries but were both grateful to be alive. Hazel also tried to hug Frank when she found out he was praetor, but she couldn’t due to her broken ribs. Hazel also trusted Frank enough to tell him that she knew that Leo was in love with a girl.

In The Blood of Olympus, Hazel and Frank were very close and reminded Leo of an old married couple. Frank would sometimes put his hand over Hazel’s, which Hazel recently would stop getting flustered at. Hazel and Frank would you to most places together. Frank and Hazel both cried together with Frank's arm around hers as they told the others about Leo’s death. During Hazel's last night at Camp Half-Blood, Frank visited Hazel and they talked to each other in hushed tones. When Nico sublely threatened Frank, Hazel laced her hand in his, making Nico's heart ache at his comfortable they looked together. Hazel kissed him and said she would see him in the morning before he left the cabin.

In The Tyrant's Tomb, we see that Hazel is worried about Frank having a death wish and wanted him to be safe. When Apollo and her are eating lunch, she's distracted and mumbles to herself about liking a guy with a death wish. She then tells Apollo how by talking to Frank and being made to feel loved by him, he washed away her curse, which she sounded grateful for. Before Hazel goes on the quest with Apollo, she has a talk with Frank out of earshot. Lavinia says that they would be there for a while, because when those two start mother henning over each other, it could take awhile. Lavinia claims that if they could wrap each other in Styrofoam peanuts, they would. When everyone thinks that Frank died, Hazel is in another part of town, and doesn't know. When Apollo tells her after they kill a legion of zombies, she leans on Arion and cries, but has to quickly compose herself. She sends Arion to go find Frank's body and goes to fight Tarquin. After the battle. Hazel is scolding Lavinia about leaving her post when she sees Arion with a figure draped across his back. It's Frank. They rush him to the medics and it is shown that Frank is healthy. Hazel and Apollo are by his side when he wakes up. Hazel hugs him and cries. She proceeds to tell him how he scared her and gives him some nectar. She kisses him on the forehead and tells him he broke her heart. Fast-forward to the end. Hazel and Frank meet Apollo in a coffee shop before they have to rouse the legion. They leave hand in hand.

In The Tower of Nero, the two work on rebuilding New Rome together and are the most efficient and respected pair of praetors to ever run the Twelfth Legion. The two also enjoy the fact that Hazel's curse appears to officially be broken and she can use her powers to create gold and jewels without any trouble.

Sammy Valdez photo

Sammy Valdez, her friend from when she lived in New Orleans.

In her former life, Sammy Valdez was Hazel's only friend and love interest. He used to take care of horses for rich people and on weekends, and would take Hazel out to ride. They dated shortly before Hazel moved away with her mother to Alaska under the influence of Gaea.

In the Underworld, it is revealed that if Gaea hadn't intervened and Hazel's mother had not forced her to move away, Hazel would've married Sammy and lived a long happy life. Instead, Sammy moved to Texas, married, had kids, and died. It is seen though that he never forgot about Hazel and it was shown that he loved her up until he died.

Friends

Percy Jackson

Percy Jackson, her close friend

Percy and Hazel first met in The Son of Neptune, when Hazel saw Percy being carried by Juno to Camp Jupiter. Hazel and Frank helped get Percy get across the Caldecott Tunnel to Camp. Hazel helped Percy once he made it and bragged about his deeds to Reyna, calling him brave and heroic. Hazel took Percy to Temple Hill and answered his questions about the Twelfth Legion Fulminata, telling him about legacies and how Camp Jupiter works. Hazel even showed him her favorite view of the city of New Rome. She also comforted Percy when he prayed to his father, Neptune, and put her hand on his back, saying he was one of them. Percy found it awkward, but was glad she was there. Percy liked her but could sense she had a deep sadness inside of her: mature for her age, nice and easygoing, but hiding a big secret. He didn't believe she would have anything to be guiltily about and thought she was nice. As for Hazel, she was in awe of him. When she first saw him, she thought he was a god in disguise, with an aura of power, and ordered Frank not to fire on him, since she thought it was the gods testing her. But when she learned he was the son of Neptune, she hoped he would heal her curse. She could also sense he was more dangerous than Jason, Nico, Reyna, or Octavian.

Hazel ended up standing for Percy and letting him join the Fifth Cohort, which Nico was very proud of her for. Because she stood for Percy, if he did something wrong, Hazel would be killed along with him. They ate dinner together, and Percy told Hazel that they can turn things around for the Fifth Cohort, calling her his friend and giving him a little smile. As she got to know him, she realized he was smarter than he looked and learned not to underestimate him, even if he thought the questions he asked at first were silly. Percy later collaborated with Frank and Hazel for winning the war games. The next day, Percy decided to go on the quest with Hazel and Frank, even though he didn't like Mars, because he thought of them as nice dependable people who made a good team. During the Quest for Thanatos, Hazel and Percy bonded and Hazel told Percy about how she died, her biggest secret. Percy accepted her, to her surprise, telling her that she deserved to go to Elysium, and that she did the right thing by standing up to Gaea.

Percy eventually told Hazel his biggest secret one he found out: he was a Greek demigod from Camp Half-Blood. Percy said he felt that he was as close to Hazel as any of his old friends from Camp, and that since he trusted her, he hoped she would trust him. But to his surprise, Hazel kissed him on the cheek and smiled with sisterly affection, saying of course she trusted him, they were family. The kiss made Percy feel warm down to his feet. Percy felt lucky to have Frank and Hazel watching over him, and thought of them as the bright spots in his scary life after his memory loss. Hazel and Frank were the only things making Percy feel not alone, and promised that he wouldn’t lose them. And when they made it to Alaska, Percy saved Hazel from Gaea and promised her that they would find Nico. The two later promised each other that they would make it back home, Percy would see Annabeth again, and Hazel make it back to Camp. Percy said that Hazel was too valuable to him and the camp and he wouldn't let anything happen to her. Percy reassured Hazel that there was more to her destiny than dying since that she was destined to fight Gaea with him, and her life was worth fighting for. Once they got back to Camp Jupiter, Percy was glad that Hazel was being treated well and as a savior of Rome, and knew that she deserved it. Percy knew Hazel wanted time alone with Frank and respected that, letting them walking around New Rome alone. The next day, Percy promised Hazel that he would find Nico as soon as they made it to Rome.

In The Mark of Athena, Percy was near Hazel when the Argo II arrived at Camp. Percy told Annabeth that Hazel was a good person, showing how close he was to her during a short amount of time. When Leo fired on Camp Jupiter by accident, Percy asked if Hazel was going to come with him to Rome, and Hazel said she would, and bought him some time so he could escape from the angry Romans. Percy was very protective of Hazel on the quest, and when she went off with Leo, Percy pulled Leo aside to tell him Hazel's story. While Percy told Leo this, he gave off an undertone that said "If you mess with (Hazel) I will personally feed you to a great white shark". In return, Hazel helped save Percy from Eidolons. Hazel was slightly scandalized by Percy when he was with Annabeth in the stables, not meeting his eyes, but it didn't affect their friendship. Percy couldn't stand seeing Hazel in pain during their voyage while missing Nico, and began to feel a responsibility for her, along with everyone else on the ship. Percy became very worried when Hazel went missing and scoured the entire seafloor to find her, Leo, and Frank. Hazel was supportive of his relationship with Annabeth, smiling when they kissed. After Percy began falling into Tartarus, Hazel realized and tried to cut the ropes, screaming for help and reaching out for him and Annabeth, to no avail.

In The House of Hades, she missed Percy very much. Percy was the demigod she admired most, and was grateful about the many times he saved her life in Alaska. She regarded Percy as one of the most important members of the crew, the backbone of the group. He gave her confidence while crossing the Atlantic and she wanted to make him and Annabeth proud, because she felt like she failed him. Hazel even trusted Hecate and decided to have the ship go the most dangerous route to Epirus just to ensure his survival. While meeting Sciron, she couldn't believe Percy was a son ph Poseidon, but realized he was like his father's good side, since he was gentle and helpful, like the kind of sea that takes ships safely to distant lands. Hazel sobbed when she saw Percy and Annabeth come out from the Doors of Death limp as corpses, and demanded that Clytius let them go, and could feel Percy's life force wane. Hazel was shocked when she saw Annabeth and Percy covered with black smoke and wanted nothing else but to save them from Pasiphaë and Clytius, which she did. When they returned to the ship, Percy demanded that Hazel stay with the Argo II because they needed her, and didn’t want her to get lost in the labyrinth.

In The Blood of Olympus, they were close friends. They both went together (with Hazel and Frank) to help defeat Nike/Victoria. The two joked with each other, when Percy joked about how her horse, Arion, cursed, and when Hazel rolled her eyes when Percy and Leo tried to get Nikes attention, calling them impossible. While they fought Nike, Percy was against Hazel using the labyrinth to help defeat her, and pretending to fight each other, since he was against both of those things, but he chose to trust Hazel, which saved them all. Percy pretended fo fight Hazel and fired popcorn at her. When Hazel fell during battle, he rushed to help her, catching her when she collapsed. Hazel later got Leo and Percy to stop arguing about zodiac signs, saying that Kekrops was a Geminus, which is different than Gemini. Though Hazel deeply cared about Percy, she kept Leo's suicidal plan from him, at his insistence. When Percy found out, he was angry at Hazel, but his rage dissipated when he couldn't be mad at Hazel while she was crying, and agreed it was a plan Leo would've done. The two are still in contact, going to Argo II reunion parties.

Jason Grace-Viria

Jason Grace, her friend.

Jason remembered Hazel as one of his friends at Camp Jupiter in The Lost Hero. Jason seemed to be very nice to Hazel, and welcomed her to Camp, even though she was a daughter of Pluto. In The Son of Neptune, Hazel missed Jason, despite only knowing him for a few weeks, and knew that he wasn’t dead. When Percy mentioned she arrived just after Jason disappeared, Hazel looked down, as if Percy had hit a sore spot. Hazel also became furious with Octavian when he wanted to stop looking for Jason, and Hazel insisted that he wasn’t dead. Hazel was also slightly angry for Jason being missing, because he put the Fifth Cohort back to square one, and ruined their reputation again.

Jason and Hazel reunited at Camp Jupiter in The Mark of Athena. However, their relationship quickly became strained. When Jason found out that Nico di Angelo was missing, he was against rescuing him because he was unsure where his loyalties lied. Hazel became angry at Jason, since she saw him as a great praetor and a man she looked up to and fair, and stormed out of the mess hall and cried. When Piper lectured Jason for being cold, Jason didn’t think he was being cold and just thought he was being cautious. The next day, when they arrived in Charleston, Jason apologized in his own way, saying that when the Romans sided with the confederacy, demigods sometimes made bad choices and spoke without thinking, and are too suspicious. Hazel stared at Jason until it dawned on her that he was apologizing. Jason then elbowed Leo so he could apologize to Hazel too.

In The House of Hades, Jason offered to take Hazel to help defeat Sciron. Hazel reveals she has mixed feelings about Jason, and wished Nico, Piper, Frank, or Leo were there instead of Jason, since she couldn’t get a read on him. Even after being with him, she thought of Jason more as a legend than a person, and didn’t quite forgive him for not wanting to rescue Nico. She also had a hard time warming up to him, with his cold and calculating eyes and his careful reserve, like he was calculating every word before he said it. Hazel didn’t understand what motivated Jason and had doubts of what he was capable of, and was worried he might hesitate saving her too, just like Nico. However, Jason was very nice to Hazel and made her feel like she was a valued member of the team, telling her she will get a handle of the Mist and that Hecate chose her for a reason. That surprised Hazel, because she knew it wasn’t a throwaway comment just to be nice. Hazel and Jason cooperated well with defeating Sciron, and when she defeated him, Jason grinned at her and said she did amazing, but was concerned when she passed out. However, Jason felt a little nervous around Hazel after she defeated Sciron, especially after Pluto appeared to her, which was a bad omen to Romans. Hazel was later confused when Jason liked Diocletian.

In The Blood of Olympus, Hazel used the Mist to turn Jason into an old man. Hazel was also concerned when Jason got up from bed, Hazel said he should be in bed, due to his injuries, making Jason wish the crew didn’t treat him like glass. Jason was later initially mad at Hazel when she didn’t reveal Leo’s suicidal plan to the others, but his anger subsided because he couldn’t be mad at Hazel when she was crying, and he agreed that it was a plan that Leo would’ve done. Jason was also considerate of Hazel when she was asleep, and made sure he didn’t wake her up when he went to talk to Nico. Hazel and Jason remained in contact after the quest, going to monthly Argo II reunion parties.

In The Tyrant's Tomb, when Hazel found out that Jason died, Hazel cried, "oh gods", and let out a single devastated sob, throwing herself on his coffin, then shivered in silence. Hazel revealed to Apollo that she had nightmares about his death and asked him how it happened. Hazel then talked to Jason, dead, and said he was angry at him for doing this to Piper and not letting her be there for him. Hazel then got up and trembled, then brought him back to Camp. Hazel attended Jason’s funeral the next day, and was an honor guard and torch bearer that stood next to the wagon carrying Jason’s coffin.

Leo Valdez-Viria

Leo, Sammy's great-grandson and her good friend.

Hazel and Leo Valdez first meet in The Mark of Athena, but first sees him in a video scroll during The Son of Neptune. When they meet at Camp Jupiter, Hazel is very suspicious of Leo and kept frowning and looking at him. They first had a proper conversation in Salt Lake City, and he found himself to be infatuated with Hazel. Hazel studied Leo, which made Leo feel self conscious, but also wondered if they met before. Hazel and Leo ended up going on Arion to Salt Lake City together after Hazel insisted. Leo liked Hazel even more after he found out about her story from Percy, and thought she seemed warm and alive, and good with people. He knew he should keep his distance from her since she was dating Frank, but thought her hair smelled good and riding with her with his hand around her waist made his heart race. Eventually, Hazel brought up the subject of Sammy with Leo, saying he looked so much like him, which embarrassed them both. While travelling through the city, they had plenty of awkward moments, like when Hazel caught Leo's hand when he almost fell, making the two be face to face. But the two became friends after they defeated Narcissus.

After their quest in Salt Lake City, their relationship was a little strained as they had complicated feelings for each other. Hazel and Leo knew they had a history, and it was made worse when Frank got jealous and would argue with Leo. Hazel hated when they argued and would try to stop it. The two became slightly more tense when Leo was against rescuing Nico di Angelo, though he eventually apologized to her at Jason's insistence. Leo even later offered to use the fortune cookie to find Nico to make it up to her. Hazel and Leo were alone again while in the Atlantic Ocean, and the two finally talked about Frank's tension with Leo and what happened at Salt Lake City. Hazel decided to show Leo about who Sammy was by pulling him into a blackout, so they could finally understand how they were connected. Leo agreed to it and the two learned that Sammy was Leo's great-grandfather.

Frank became furious at Hazel and Leo when they found out they were holding hands and staring into each other's eyes, because he didn't know it was a blackout. Leo later reassured Frank that he did not like Hazel in that way, but even he was unsure how he felt about the daughter of Pluto. He thought she was awesome and cute, and he had a weakness for girls like her. But seeing the flashback complicated his feelings for her a lot. Leo was determined to save Hazel after they got lost in the Atlantic Ocean, worried that she was in trouble. Hazel was overjoyed to see Leo once they reunited at Camp Fish-Blood, beaming at Leo. Leo was very impressed with Hazel after finding out she befriended everyone at Camp Fish-Blood, and thought she seemed beautiful and sure of herself, the opposite of her old self from the 1940s. After Leo brought up Sammy against Hazel told Leo that she needed time for the whole Leo/Sammy thing to sink in and process it.

Once they got to Rome, Hazel wanted Leo to go on the quest with her and Frank to find Nico, which made Frank's smile look like Chrysaor's mask. The two were very tense, and Hazel was annoyed at Leo for not being impressed with the scenery in the city. Leo also felt awkward that Hazel mostly talked to Frank and not him, as if Leo ceased to exist. Hazel was also mad at Leo when he implied that Frank was fat, and when he kept arguing with him. Leo was also worried about Hazel after she left for awhile, and he and Frank both agreed to find her. But after Leo saved Frank and Hazel from Eidolons and made a plan to get to Nico, Percy, Jason, and Piper, the tension between Hazel and Leo subsided. After Percy and Annabeth fell into Tartarus, Hazel was the only one who understood why Leo blamed himself, since they both met Nemesis in Salt Lake City. Hazel insisted that it was Gaea's fault, not his, and gripped his hand, telling him that after what happened to Sammy, she cannot bear him to blame himself for another thing that happened.

In The House of Hades, the two had become good friends, though there was still a level of tension between the two. Hazel was very worried about Leo after Percy and Annabeth fell into Tartarus, since he was being more hard on himself than usual, but also thought he sometimes reminded her too much of Sammy when he smiled and joked. As for Leo, he was very infatuated by Hazel and sometimes thought she was hot, which he felt very guilty about. Nevertheless, the two deeply cared about each other and helped thwart off the Ourae on the way to Epirus. Leo was also very worried about Hazel after she met Hecate and caught her after she fell. Hazel also wished that Leo was with her instead of Jason when she went to defeat Sciron. Hazel was extremely relieved when Leo came back from Ogygia, and felt comfortable enough with him to give him a sisterly kiss on the cheek. But she soon was extremely worried after he avoided the subject, and Leo brushed it off, saying he didn't need an extra mom. After they got back on the ship, Hazel realized he met someone after Leo didn't give longing looks to her and seemed less tense with her.

After the two got separated from the others in the House of Hades, Hazel finally decided to bring up Sammy again to Leo. Hazel apologized for leading him on, thinking he was Sammy, and making everything awkward between the two, even if she didn't mean to. Leo reassured Hazel that it was okay, and that they met for a reason. He reassured her that she and Frank were good together and that he was happy for them, and hoped they had a chance to ne happy once everything was over. Hazel was grateful for what Leo said, and called him a philosopher. Hazel was relieved and finally felt like something was untangling inside her, finally finding a good friend. Hazel asked Leo what happened while he was gone and if he met someone, and Leo promised to tell her later, once they got out of this. The two collaborated well on defeating Pasiphaë and Clytius, and even held hands without it being awkward.

In The Blood of Olympus, Hazel finally got Leo to spill about Calypso, and drew a portrait of her that looked just like her. Leo loved all of his friends, including Hazel, and would do anything for them. Leo thought that Hazel was a good listener and sat next to him at breakfast because she was the least likely to punch him after he made bad jokes. Hazel and Leo went with Percy and Frank to go subdue Nike/Victoria, and even though he wasn't infatuated with her anymore, he was super impressed with her for everything she did in the House of Hades, and looked at her in admiration while she was riding Arion. Hazel could tell what he was thinking, and blushed, flustered. Hazel later rolled her eyes at Leo and Percy when they made dumb jokes, calling them both impossible. Leo was very worried when Hazel got injured while fighting and wanted to rush into the field to save her. Leo called Hazel awesome and did an impression of her after the fight was over.

Once the Argo II made it to Delos, Leo wanted Hazel and Frank to come with him because he trusted the two more than the others to know about his suicidal plan to sacrifice himself. Hazel was very upset when she heard the news, and a tear fell down her cheek. Leo told Hazel that she was the only one who could cover for him, since Sammy knew how special she was. He said that he blessed him when he was a baby because he knew that Hazel would help him, and that everything was leading up to it. Hazel burst into tears and hugged Leo. Hazel said that she hated the plan, but she would do it for him. Hazel ended up making. Fake mist version of the Physician's Cure and gave it to Piper.

After Leo died, Hazel tearfully revealed her plan to the others, after telling Piper that the cure was fake. The others were initially angry at Hazel for helping Leo, but after Hazel cried they knew it was exactly what Leo would've done. Hazel could feel Leo's death and knew better than the others to think he was alive, which made her feel even more guilty about the situation. On her second night at Camp Half-Blood, she broke down in front of Nico, saying that she shouldn't have helped him take the cure and that he could not have possibly survived the explosion. She wished he hadn't died alone, and broke down after she realized there was no one to give him the cure, no one to find the body, and no one to help him. She cried until she fell asleep from exhaustion.

In September, Hazel got a parchment scroll from Leo confirming he was alive. In The Hidden Oracle and The Dark Prophecy, Leo expressed interest in seeing Hazel again and went to Camp Jupiter to help her and the others defeat Caligula and warn them about his assault on the camp. Everyone, including Hazel, went into a line and punched him. Leo was relieved that Hazel was okay.

Piper McLean

Piper McLean, one of her best friends.

Hazel and Piper met and befriended each other in The Mark of Athena. Piper wondered what Hazel thought of Camp Half-Blood and wondered if it seemed alien to her or if it made her miss Camp Jupiter. Piper also quickly realized that Hazel and Leo had a history, and that he was competing with Frank for attention. Hazel also winced at Piper when Jason was acting clueless of Pipers feelings about Reyna. When Piper could sense Eidolons in the room, Hazel said that Piper was right because Hazel had met Eidolons before in the Fields of Asphodel. Hazel and Piper helped defeat the Eidolons and Hazel commanded them to obey Piper, and gave Piper a look of encouragement. Later, Piper was determined to save Nico di Angelo since he was Hazel's brother, and put her hand on Hazel’s shoulder, reassuring her. Piper later lectured Leo and Jason for not wanting to save Nico, saying they were cold and that Hazel’s brother was dying. Hazel and Piper later went to meet Aphrodite with Annabeth, and was embarrassed at her mother for insulting Hazel's clothing, thinking nothing was wrong with how she dressed. When Hazel went missing, Piper stared into Katoptris for hours trying to find a vision of her, and cried with relief when she was found, jumping in the water to greet her.

In The House of Hades, Hazel and Piper bonded for the first time when they distracted Sciron's turtle to protect the ship, and they both went on Arion as they zipped around the turtles head. Hazel also wished Piper was with her when she helped defeat Sciron instead of Jason. After the experience, Hazel and Piper began hanging out more and talking about the boys gross habits, being the only two girls on the ship, and shed tears about Annabeth. Piper also learned from Hazel how controlling the Mist was similar to Charmspeak. Piper offered to help Hazel control the Mist, and in return, Hazel helped Piper with her swordfighting. Piper felt like she had a new friend and hoped Hazel was okay when she was nauseous one time. After the Argo II was stuck in North Africa for a week, Hazel and Piper spent hours a day swordfighting, true to Hazel’s promise. Later, Piper helped Hazel defeat Clytius. The night after they came back from rescuing Annabeth and Percy, Piper and Hazel practiced swordfighting.

In The Blood of Olympus, Hazel and Piper were very close friends, and Piper promised to teach Hazel to surf, in case they survived their quest. Piper trusted Hazel's mist magic the most when she went to Ithaca. Piper was also very supportive of Hazel’s relationship with Frank. And when Piper was going to the Parthenon underground, Piper was very grateful for Hazel and considered her one of her best friends, and that without her or Annabeth, she wouldn't of been able to discover her own courage or sing to Geminus. Hazel and Piper confided in each other, with Hazel telling Piper her worries about Jason being the linchpin to Hera's plan. As for Hazel, Hazel was very close to Piper but kept Leo's suicidal plan from her, at his insistence, and felt very guilty when she gave a fake version of the cure made from the mist to Piper. After Leo’s death, Hazel broke down and told Piper to take out the cure, and then Piper glared at Hazel when the cure was gone. Piper was originally angry at Hazel for not revealing Leo's plan, but couldn’t stay mad at her while she was crying and agreed that it was exactly a plan Leo would've done.

After the Romans left Camp, Piper missed Hazel and felt that Camp was empty without her and the other Romans. However, Hazel and Piper remained in contact and met for monthly Argo II reunion meetings. In The Tyrant's Tomb, Hazel was angry when Jason died because of how close Piper and Jason were, and asked his coffin how he could do this to Piper.

Annabeth Chase-Viria

Annabeth Chase, her good friend

Hazel and Annabeth met in The Mark of Athena, and Annabeth was jealous of Hazel and the adventures she had with Percy, and how protective he was of her. Annabeth even thought Hazel and Percy were a couple, but she dismissed the thought when she realized she was dating Frank Zhang. Annabeth was also very curious when she found out Hazel was the sister of Nico di Angelo, when she saw her holding a Ruby, and when she saw her looking at Leo sadly. Annabeth was also suspicious of Hazel when she covered up what Ella was saying, which was clearly a prophecy. However, Annabeth felt a glimmer of hope when Hazel rode Arion to distract the Romans. Later, Annabeth left a queasy Hazel at her cabin door to help Frank and Percy.

That night, the ship had dinner, and Hazel defended Annabeth, saying that she was right, and later got worried when she mentioned the The legend Reyna started mentioning. After, when Annabeth and Percy talked about Nico, Annabeth wanted to immediately talk to Hazel about it, showing the closeness of the two over a short amount of time. Annabeth later tried cheering up Hazel after she got into a fight with Jason and Leo by telling her funny stories about Percy. Later, when the Argo II reached Charleston, Annabeth went on a girls adventure with Piper McLean and Hazel by following a map to find a ghost, and empathized with Hazel when she saw that she was nervous, thinking about everything she must’ve seen in the Fields of Asphodel already. She didn’t mind hanging out with Hazel, even if she was creeped out by everything there. The two also found out about her falling out with Athena/Minerva from Aphrodite/Venus. Later, Hazel smiled at Annabeth when she saw her hug Percy, being supportive of the couple. Annabeth also promised to find Leo and Frank when Hazel got worried. The two interacted more and more on the ship, becoming close friends by the time they got to Rome.

After Annabeth outsmarted Arachne, Hazel looked at Annabeth with admiration, but was the first person to realize that Arachne’s rope was pulling her into Tartarus and yelled for everyone to cut the rope, and for everyone to help her. The last thing Annabeth heard before falling into Tartarus was Hazel crying for help. Hazel was extremely saddened for Annabeth falling into the pit but still trusted that she could save her.

In The House of Hades, Hazel missed Annabeth very much and regarded her as the leader of the seven, and the smartest demigod, the one with all the answers. She wanted to take initiative and make Annabeth proud of her. Hazel even trusted Hecate and decided to have the ship go the most dangerous route to Epirus just to ensure her survival. Hazel sobbed when she saw Percy and Annabeth come out from the Doors of Death limp as corpses, and demanded that Clytius let them go, and could feel Annabeth’s life force wane. Hazel was shocked when she saw Annabeth and Percy covered with black smoke and wanted nothing else but to save them from Pasiphaë and Clytius, which she did. When they returned to the ship, Annabeth demanded that Hazel stay with the Argo II because they needed her, and didn’t want her to get lost in the labyrinth.

In The Blood of Olympus, Hazel helped disguise Annabeth with the Mist so she could go to Ithaca with Piper and Jason. Hazel also talked strategy with Annabeth before going to the Acropolis of Athens. As for Hazel, she cared about Annabeth but she kept Leo's suicidal plan from her at his insistence. When the truth came out, Hazel cried to everyone about giving Leo the cure and manipulating the mist. Everyone was mad at Hazel first, but their anger subsided because they couldn’t stand seeing Hazel crying, and they agreed it was a plan Leo would’ve done. The two have remained in contact, hoping to monthly Argo II réunion parties.

Dakota cropped

Dakota, her fellow centurion.

Dakota is Hazel's superior in their branch of the legion. He had apparently stood for Hazel when they were deciding on cohorts and the two have been teammates for a few months.

Reyna Viria

Reyna Ramírez-Arellano, her good friend and former praetor.

In The Son of Neptune, Hazel is Reyna's subordinate at Camp Jupiter. Reyna has little respect for the daughter of Pluto, and didn't trust her. She reluctantly let her in to Camp Jupiter, but she was very much against it, due to children of Pluto being bad omens. Reyna even tells Percy that she thinks Hazel would not be a good leader, due to her being a daughter of Pluto, and the rumors of where she came from. Reyna is also very strict with her, being sarcastic with her when she is late. She is against a daughter of Pluto even standing for Percy but reluctantly agrees, wrinkling her nose at the thought, and promoted her to legionnaire after she saved Dakota. As for Hazel, she respects Reyna but is uneasy around her due to being her boss, and is afraid of being punished by her. Hazel thought that Reyna wasn't that bad as praetor by herself, but was afraid what she would be like if someone bad shared her power, knowing Reyna was dangerous. However, Hazel is willing to help Reyna and asks Hylla Ramírez-Arellano to help her, and stands up for her when Octavian said she was stupid.

In The Mark of Athena, Hazel knew Reyna's feelings for Jason and hated how oblivious he was to the fact. She sympathized with the daughter of Bellona, knowing she couldn't stop Octavian and that contacting her would be no help. In The House of Hades, Hazel was unsure if Reyna could make it to Epirus alive, since it was hard enough for the seven to make it there with a warship. Later, when Reyna arrived, Hazel was shocked at her state and could barely recognize her. Hazel was uneasy and didn't know what to think about her old boss showing up, and put her arm protectively through Frank's when she addressed him. Hazel helps convince Reyna that Frank is a good praetor, telling her that he was amazing, and she respects her judgement. By The Blood of Olympus, Reyna seems to have warmed up to Hazel, promoting her to Centurion and letting her date Frank.

In The Tyrant's Tomb, the two are very close, and Reyna is willing to hear her out when Apollo and Meg McCaffrey come back with her. Reyna helps Hazel with driving, and gave her driving lessons with her truck. Reyna and Hazel also joke together, and Reyna lets Hazel use her truck to practice driving, and they joke about how Hazel didn’t run over Terminus again during driving training. Hazel is worried about Reyna during the Battle of San Francisco Bay, and lightly hugs her in relief when she finds out she is okay, thanking the gods she was alive. The two respect each other and Reyna addresses Hazel as "Centurion Levesque". When the daughter of Bellona retired from the legion to join the Hunters of Artemis, she eagerly accepted the daughter of Pluto as her successor, joining in on the Fifth Cohort chanting her name when they need a new praetor.

Hylla SoM GN

Hylla Ramírez-Arellano, the Amazon queen who helped her and her friends escape.

Hazel meets Hylla in The Son of Neptune and asks her to help her sister, Reyna. Hylla agrees to talk to Hazel and hear her out. Hylla respects Hazel and tells her about Otrera, how the Amazons are a mix of Greek and Roman, and about Percy. Hylla is impressed with Hazel when she manages to tame Arion. Hylla lets Hazel escape on him with Frank and Percy, and tells her she’s glad she met her. Hazel wished that she had a sister like Hylla, and took her hand, wondering if it’s possible to make a friend that fast.

When The Amazons arrive to fight Polybotes, Hazel is glad Hylla survived and yells her name.

Lavinia

Lavinia Asimov, her friend and subordinate.

Hazel was Lavinia's Centurion in the Fifth Cohort, and Lavinia respected Hazels position as centurion. In The Tyrant's Tomb, Hazel and Lavinia are on sentry duty and lets her go for awhile. The two later fight the Eurynomos with Apollo and Meg McCaffrey, and Lavinia trusts Hazel to fight, telling Apollo that Hazels got this. Hazel later covers for Lavinia to Reyna Ramírez-Arellano and Frank Zhang, telling her to tell the praetors that she went to Temescal on her orders.

Later, Lavinia, Hazel, Meg, and Apollo sit together on the roof of New Rome University for a picnic, and gives half of her veggie wrap to Lavinia when an eagle takes her sandwich. The four plan for the quest to Tarquin's Tomb and Lavinia mouths "adorable" to Apollo when Hazel talks about how she loves Frank. She also tells her to not chew gum on the quest. The four meet on the Field of Mars and go to the tomb. They help Apollo when he gets injured and carry’s him back to Camp Jupiter. Hazel lets Lavinia go in the woods and drive the eurynomos away with her Manubalista. Hazel tells Apollo that she doesn’t think Lavinia is being wise, but she says that she trusts her because whatever she does, she comes back unscathed.

Soon after, Hazel sees Lavinia arguing with Don, and yells her name, reminding Apollo of a mother annoyed by her toddler child. Lavinia tells Hazel that she needs a minute and Hazel wonders if she is too young to get ulcers.

After the Battle of San Francisco Bay, Lavinia comes back and tells Hazel about how she and Reyna blew up the Julia Drusilla Yachts. Hazel is shocked and wonders how she did it. Hazel tells her what she did was amazing but tells her that she deserted her post and that she didn’t give her permission, but Lavinia tells her she got orders from Reyna. Reyna backs up this statement.

At the next meeting at the Senate House, when Frank asks who should become praetor next, Lavinia starts chanting Hazel’s name for her to become praetor. When they need a replacement for Centurion, Hazel planned to promote her to Centurion but the Fifth cohort started chanting her name before Hazel could promote her. Hazel smiles at Lavinia after and promotes her to Centurion in her place, praising her for her heroism. She also tells her that the fifth cohort read her mind when they started chanting her name.

Hazel doesn't judge Lavinia for being attracted to Poison Oak and being gay, even letting her sneak out to see her, impressive since she was born in 1928.

Meg Viria

Hazel meets the daughter of Demeter in The Tyrant's Tomb', and leads her through the Caldecott Tunnel to Camp Jupiter, and introduces Meg to Reyna Avila Ramírez-Arellano. A few days later, Hazel, Meg, Apollo, and Lavinia Asimov sit on the roof of New Rome University for lunch, and the four plan a quest to find Tarquin’s Tomb. Meg finds out about Hazel’s curse and asks her if she can do cool underground stuff and if she can summon jewels, and Hazel tells her she can but she cannot spend it. Meg asks her if she can have a diamond until Apollo chastises her. Hazel also tells Meg to be stealthy on the quest.

On the quest, Meg and Hazel talk a lot, and Hazel asks Meg if Apollo complains a lot, in which Meg replies that he used to be whinier. Hazel is surprised to learn that Meg can talk to plants but doesn’t judge her.

At the Battle of San Francisco Bay, Apollo and Meg find Hazel and they go to the bookstore to find Tyson, Ella, and Tarquin.

Apollo Viria

Apollo, her good friend.

Apollo and Hazel first meet formally when Apollo and Meg McCaffrey are carrying the coffin of Jason Grace to Camp Jupiter, and respects her as a fighter. Hazel does not blame Apollo for what happened to Jason and tells Reyna Ramírez-Arellano about the whole situation. Later, Apollo, Hazel, Meg, and Lavinia Asimov sat on the roof of New Rome University for lunch, and Hazel rants about how Frank Zhang constantly puts himself in danger, and about her curse. On the way to Tarquin's Tomb, Hazel and Apollo bond over how they tune out teachers and lectures, and talks about how she doesn’t want to lose Frank and her worries about him. Apollo is knocked out by Tarquin, and Hazel gets so worried and upset about it that she screamed and made the back walls collapse, and helped carry him back to Camp. The next day, Apollo immediately asks where Hazel is after he wakes up from his injuries.

The next time the two see each other, Hazel asks him how his wound is and mentioned that his death aura is getting stronger by the hour. Hazel confides in Apollo that she wished Nico di Angelo was here, and joked about Lavinia stressing her out, making Apollo laugh. Hazel assigns Apollo to teach archery and goes off with her Fifth Cohort.

During the Battle of San Francisco Bay, Apollo and Meg go meet Hazel and they go to the bookstore to find Tyson, Ella, and Tarquin, and he tells Hazel about what happened to Frank. Hazel defends Apollo when he is attacked by Tarquin, and then kills the undead king. Later, Apollo and Hazel sit at Frank’s bedside all night long, and he explains to her that Frank took control of his destiny, and maybe Juno got rid of Frank’s curse, and they grieve over Jason.

At the next meeting at the Senate, Apollo is proud of Hazel becoming Praetor and notes that Rome is in good hands. Apollo also thinks he did little compared to what Hazel did, noting the respect he has for her. Apollo says goodbye to Hazel the next day, thinking that the Twelfth Legion Fulminata would rise from the ashes and enter a golden age with her as leader.

Hazel went to visit her and Frank at Camp Jupiter in The Tower of Nero, and was impressed at everything she had done as praetor already.

Family

Marie Levesque GN

Marie Levesque, Hazel's mother.

Marie Levesque is Hazel's mother. She is the one responsible for Hazel's curse. She was a fortune teller and a jewel seller who once summoned Pluto using a spell that Hecate granted her, and Pluto courted her. Later, he swore on the River Styx that he would grant her anything she wished. Marie, who had been poor her entire life, wished for all the riches in the earth. Pluto warned her of the curse it would bring, but still granted her the wish, and thus, Hazel's curse.

Marie is said to be selfish in the beginning. She was under Gaea's spell and blamed Hazel for her curse. Under Gaea, she uses her daughter and the two go to Alaska to avoid the gods. Hazel is then used by Gaea to resurrect Alcyoneus.

At first, Marie is thought to hate Hazel and think that she is a cursed child. In the end, Marie reveals that she loves Hazel and that Hazel is the one greatest treasure in her life and attempts to sacrifice herself in order to save Hazel, even if that meant that Alcyoneus and Gaea would rise. Hazel, in order to stop Alcyoneus' rise, sacrifices herself. She drowns with her mother holding her in her arms and they manage to delay the rise of the Gigantes for another couple of decades.

Nico di Angelo

Nico di Angelo, her half-brother.

Hazel and Nico first met a month after the events of The Last Olympian, when Nico went into the Underworld after Thanatos was captured to bring Bianca back from the dead. However, she chose Rebirth, and instead, Nico found Hazel in the Fields of Asphodel. Nico could immediately sense that she was a daughter of Pluto and that she remembered her past. Nico told her that he came to bring his sister, Bianca, back, but he failed, but he told Hazel that she needed another chance and come with him. While on their journey to the world, Nico brought Hazel to Persephone's Garden and told her about the pomegranate seeds: a last resort food only children of Hades/Pluto can eat. Nico brought Hazel to Camp Jupiter to meet Reyna and Jason, and Nico told them that he found her in New Orleans. Hazel first thought that Nico was a scrawny white boy that couldn’t fight and laughed when he first called his sword "Stygian Iron". However, Hazel soon realized that Nico was the most dangerous demigod, even more so than Reyna, Jason, or Octavian.

In The Son of Neptune, Hazel and Nico are on good terms, with Hazel greatly caring about Nico as the only family she has left. Nico and Hazel discussed a lot about current events going on, and both figured out that Thanatos was captured, and knew a lot about the Gigantes, especially Alcyoneus. Nico also helped Hazel with her blackouts and helped her control them, and was the only one who knew about Hazels past. Nico liked to remind her that she could make things right and that she belonged at Camp Jupiter. However, Hazel sometimes gets very frustrated with Nico, especially when he keeps secrets from her, like refusing to tell her where Percy came from, and sometimes can’t trust him. Nico would sometimes accidentally call Hazel Bianca, making Hazel jealous and her mouth taste like metal, reminding her of his "real" sister. Hazel also sometimes dreaded when Nico came to camp because all of the Romans (except for Frank and Dakota) saw it as a bad omen. However, Nico tried to protect her whenever he could: healing her cuts when she ran to the mess hall and yelling her not to apologize for her blackouts. Nico also had a tendency to call Hazel his sister, and "sis" when he was especially proud. Nico was very proud of Hazel when she stood for Percy. The two also discussed Alcyoneus at the next senate meeting.

Later, when Hazel left for Alaska with Frank and Percy, Nico pulped Hazel aside to wish her luck and say goodbye. She hoped he would stay at Camp to defend it, but Nico said he was going to the Underworld to help his father and try to find the Doors of Death. Hazel told Nico to be careful and was worried she would never see him again. Nico told Hazel to take care of herself and took her hand, saying he wanted to give her a chance at Elysium and didn’t want to lose her again. Hazel knew he was thinking of Bianca, but for once, she wasn’t jealous of her, and just wanted to spend more time with her brother. Later, Hazel got a vision from Gaea who told her that Nico was manipulating her and using her, which she didn’t believe, and then told her that she captured him and he would die soon, making her cry and panic. She didn’t want to believe that he was captured, but she had a feeling that she was right, and worried about losing the only family she had left.

In The Mark of Athena, Hazel was terribly worried about Nico. She found out from Nemesis that he only had six days to live and was determined to help him. After Hazel found out that Nico was in the bronze jar, Hazel burst out sobbing and was even more determined to rescue him. Hazel became furious at Leo and Jason for suggesting that they should leave him in Rome to die, storming out of the room. However, she forgave them when they apologized. Hazel later went to track down Nico’s location with Frank and Leo. After she rescued Nico, Hazel sat with Nico and gave him Ambrosia as they spoke. Nico told Hazel about Tartarus and how he found the Doors and arrived in Rome. Hazel later helped Nico to his feet to speak to the group, and held his shoulders as he coughed until he could stand again. After Percy and Annabeth fell into Tartarus, Hazel agreed with Nico that they were alive.

In The House of Hades, Hazel and Nico were very close, with Nico mostly spending time with her. They both cooperated well with the Ourae and they both went to Venice with Frank to get barley cakes from Triptolemus. Hazel and Nico both knew secrets about the House of Hades that they refused to tell the others, showing how they trusted each other. Hazel felt that Nico radiated old energy and felt that he didn't belong in the modern world. Hazel and Nico understood and shared each other’s sadness, knowing children of Hades rarely had happy lives. Nico and Hazel often worried about each other's well being. Nico worried about Hazel when she went to see Hecate and blamed himself when she was poisoned by Triptolemus, even threatening the god to heal her. As for Hazel, when Nico fell against the ship walls and goblets fell on him, Hazel stayed to take care of him. And after Venice, Hazel often worried about Nico, who became even more reclusive and morose, and from everything he had gone through. However, Nico began to show Hazel affection, getting closer, giving her a kiss on the cheek when she was seasick.

After they went through the House of Hades, Hazel called Nico to her. Nico kissed Hazel on the forehead and told her that the ghosts were right, only one of them would make it to the Doors, and they were right. Nico then said that she made her father proud. Hazel then cupped her hand on his face, saying that she wouldn’t of defeated Clytius without him. Hazel noticed that Nico had been crying. Hazel wanted to know so sadly what was going on with him over the past few weeks, but was so glad to have her brother there with her. Hazel and Nico then helped the group Shadow Travel back to the ship, combining their strength, holding hands. Hazel glanced at Nico soon after and saw pain in his eyes, looking at Percy and Annabeth hold hands, but she thought it was because he went through Tartarus alone while they had each other.

In The Blood of Olympus, Nico and Hazel were very worried about each other. Hazel asked Artemis if Nico was okay when she went to Delos. Nico, meanwhile, missed Hazel very much and his primary concern was for Hazel out of the Seven. When he found out that one of the seven, including Hazel, may die, he felt empty again, like he was back in the bronze jar. He was very grateful to Hazel and the others for rescuing him in Rome and welcoming him on to the ship.

When Nico reunited with Hazel, Nico was the only demigod not angry at Hazel (besides Frank) for Leo's death, because he knew that’s what Leo would’ve done. Nico and Hazel also knew that Leo was dead for good. Nico and Hazel shared Hades' Cabin together, with Nico grateful to be with his sister. Hazel and Frank offered for Nico to come live at Camp Jupiter with them, but Nico declined, opting to stay at Camp. Nico then told Frank to be good to Hazel and that he would be flower boy at his wedding, embarrassing Hazel. After Frank left, Hazel chastised Nico for this. They both agreed that they would miss each other and Hazel made Nico promise that he would visit. Nico congratulated Hazel on becoming Centurion and asked if there were rules against Centurions dating praetors, which Hazel said was the least of her problems. Nico also told hazel that she wasn’t the same girl he brought to Camp Jupiter and that she was confident now, and Hazel thanked him for it, but Nico said it was because of Hazel she was. Hazel and Nico then discussed Leo’s death and he reassured her that it wasn’t her fault. Hazel expressed guilt over him dying alone and Nico hugged her and tucked her in as she cried herself to sleep. The next morning, he made sure he and Jason didn’t wake Hazel, as she was still asleep.

In The Hidden Oracle, Nico said that Hazel was busy with "The Twelfth Legion thing" implying that they didn’t see each other much. In The Tyrant's Tomb, Hazel mentions that Nico could help cure Apollo’s scratch.

Pluto GN

Pluto, Hazel's father.

Hazel has only met her father Pluto a few times. It is clear that Pluto cares about his daughter very much, giving her birthday presents, and apologizing for unwillingly cursing her. It is Pluto who tells her that her curse will one day be washed away by a descendant of Neptune.

Later, in The Son of Neptune, after Thanatos has been freed and the monsters defeated, Hazel asks him if she is on the list of escaped souls. Thanatos tells her that she is not on the list, but offers to double check. Hazel declines the offer. Hazel is later asked if Pluto has visited her. She replies that he has not, but notes that this may be a gift to her, as if he acknowledges her existence, she may have to return to the Underworld. This shows how much Pluto cares about her.

In The House of Hades, after Hazel prays to her father for help, it is implied that he sent Arion to her, so that she could talk to Hecate. After Hazel's first successful use of the Mist, Pluto is so proud that his Greek and Roman forms momentarily unite, and he is able to appear before her to give advice on fighting Pasiphaë. Hazel, however, is still somewhat resentful, but slowly warms up to him. Nonetheless, Hazel is furious when she sees her father's broken altar in the Necromanteion.
