You know, Magnus . . . sometimes it's best not to look as far as you're able to look, or to listen to everything you're able to hear.

–Heimdall to Magnus Chase, in the Hammer of Thor

Heimdall (pronounced "HAME-doll;" in other versions Heimdallr or Heimdallur) is the Norse Aesir god of vigilance, the son of nine mothers. He possesses the resounding horn Gjallarhorn and the golden-maned horse, Gulltoppr. He keeps watch for the onset of Ragnarök while drinking fine mead in his dwelling Himinbjörg, located where the rainbow bridge Bifröst meets Asgard.

Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard[]

The Sword of Summer[]

A daughter of Heimdall was one of the newcomers who arrived at Hotel Valhalla. Her appearance was presumably surprising to the rest of the einherjar.

The Hammer of Thor[]

Heimdall graciously grants Magnus, Samirah, Alex, Halfborn Gunderson, and Amir his blessing to cross the Bifrost bridge. He meets them all at the top, where he proudly shows his collection of selfies.

After being requested to search the Nine Worlds with his enhanced vision, he spies the giants, along with Utgard-Loki's message. When they are informed of Loki's wedding plans, Sam issues one of Heimdall's wedding oaths, vowing to only marry Amir. Shortly afterwards, Heimdall sends them back to Midgard.

Heimdall, along with Thor and Vidar, tunneled down the earth to locate the wedding party. According to Vidar, he wasn't much help, as he was taking selfies non-stop.

Eventually, just as Loki is freed from his binds, the three finally burst in and take down all the giants in the room. However, they were unable to catch the trickster god before he escaped.

After the party at Valhalla, Heimdall departed the hotel early to resume his duties on the Bifrost Bridge.

The Ship of the Dead[]

Heimdall was present at Vigridr when the crew of the Big Banana handed Loki over to the gods.

9 from the Nine Worlds[]

Just Another Decapitated Head []

Heimdall watches Thor’s goats while the god jogs around the Nine Worlds. He dresses the goats in pajamas and tries to take a video until Odin tells him to stop and keep watch for Jotunn attacks.

Appearance[]

Gjallarhorn

His horn, Gjallar

Heimdall has curly white-blond hair like ram's wool, alabaster colored eyes and golden teeth. He wears a padded cloth tunic and woolly leggings, all beige to pick up the colors of the Bifrost. He is mentioned to have fluffy eyebrows. Magnus describes him as "the goofy guy you didn't want to sit next to on the school bus."

When the gods arrive at Loki's Cavern, Heimdall is wearing a helmet, infrared goggles, jackboots, and full Kevlar body armor with the letters GRRM across the chest.

Abilities[]

  • Super-Senses: Heimdall can see and hear virtually everything that occurs across the nine realms. He can process this information so that it does not overwhelm him. He can quickly scan the realms for specific information sorting through all he sees and hears. However, he is not omniscient. He must actively focus on his senses to notice something. There are limits to what he can see through such as he can only see through about a mile of solid rock.
  • Bifrost Control: As guardian of Bifrost, Heimdall can control access to it. He can send it specific locations to allow others access and render its energies safe for non-gods to travel on.
