StygianIronSword

Nico's Sword.

Nico's Sword is a three-foot-long black sword forged from Stygian Iron that has the power to suck away its victim's essence (soul). Nico di Angelo acquired it sometime between The Titan's Curse and The Battle of the Labyrinth. The origin of the sword is currently unknown, but there is a possibility that Nico forged it himself before or during The Battle of the Labyrinth when he is seen near the River Styx. The sword is a Falcata sword.

The Battle of the Labyrinth[]

Nico's sword first appears here. He uses it to defeat monsters in the Battle of the Labyrinth.

The Last Olympian[]

Nico uses his sword in the Battle of Manhattan to defeat monsters when he shows up with his father, Hades.

The Heroes of Olympus[]

The Son of Neptune[]

Hazel Levesque, Nico's half-sister, mentions that she at first didn't think much of it, though that was before she'd seen it in action. Nico is seen wearing the sword while meeting Percy in Camp Jupiter, and he leaves it outside of New Rome with Tiberinus while participating as a senator. He later takes it with him when he embarks upon a journey to locate the Doors of Death from inside the Underworld, and manages to take it with him while falling into Tartarus.

The Mark of Athena[]

Hazel uses her sense of Underworld metals to try and track down her brother, who has been captured by the Gigantes Unfortunately, Gaea separated Nico and his sword to lead his friends Frank Zhang, Hazel Levesque, and Leo Valdez, who were attempting to rescue him, fell into a trap.

The Sun and the Star: A Nico di Angelo Adventure[]

Nico takes the sword with him on his and Will's quest into Tartarus. However, the sword proves to be useless against the mania of Amphithemis as mania can only be destroyed by Imperial Gold. When Nico and Will locate Bob's regeneration pod, Nico's sword just bounces off of the bubble rather than popping it easily. On Bob's urging, the two demigods combine their powers together to free Bob with Will channeling his photokinesis through the sword, increasing its power and allowing it to free Bob. During the fight that follows against Nyx and her monster army, Will channels his power through the sword again to help Nico before breaking the connection to launch a direct attack on Nyx with a ray of light.

Appearance[]

Percy Jackson describes it as being "black as a nightmare and truly frightening." It glows faintly with a sinister purple light.

Uses[]

  • Nico uses it to summon as well as banish the dead by stabbing it into the ground.
  • The sword sucks the essence of the killed monster into the sword, so the monster stays in Tartarus longer or prevents them from reforming, also empowering the essence of the blade.
  • The sword strikes fear into its owner's enemies.
  • The sword seems to "make shadows even gloomier, as if the infernal metal was soaking the light and heat out of the air", according to Jason Grace.
  • To break Bob's regeneration pod.
  • By channeling his photokinesis through the sword, Will Solace can increase its power.

Trivia[]

  • While Nico used to use the sword for his powers, he simply uses it as a means of channeling his power as he is capable of using the same powers barehanded.
