Pegasi are winged horses. They have been known to come in a variety of colors from white, black, brown and even mixed colors (ex: brown and white). They are named after the original Pegasus and are his offspring. The most notable pegasus in the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series is Blackjack, Percy Jackson's pure black Pegasus.

History

The name Pegasus (plural Pegasi) comes from the Greek word for spring. Legend tells how the first Pegasus sprang from the neck of the Gorgon Medusa slain by the demigod Perseus. He was the son of Medusa and Poseidon, and wherever his hoof struck the ground, a spring flowed. The Pegasus flew to Olympus and brought thunderbolts to Zeus. Pegasus is a pure-white horse, while his offspring may be white, black, brown or mixed.

Percy Jackson and the Olympians

The Lightning Thief

When Percy Jackson is given the tour at Camp Half-Blood he notices some of the horses have wings.

The Sea of Monsters

Blackjack was seen at the end of the book on board the Princess Andromeda as Luke Castellan's forced steed and is the first pure black pegasus Percy had ever seen.

The Titan's Curse

Percy gets a pegasus riding lesson with Silena Beauregard, daughter of Aphrodite. It is also mentioned that the pegasi (mostly Blackjack) go to Percy to get him to help them with their and other sea creatures' problems. Afterwards, Blackjack helps Percy with traveling, including chasing after Zoë Nightshade, Grover Underwood, Bianca di Angelo, and Thalia Grace to assist them in their quest to save Artemis and Annabeth Chase.

The Battle of the Labyrinth

Percy visits the stables. Percy calls Blackjack and four other pegasi to transport himself and his friends back to Camp Half-Blood.

The Last Olympian

Percy uses Blackjack as his transportation in the Battle of Manhattan. Later, when Percy told Silena that anyone that could get along with Clarisse has talent, she takes a pegasus and flies back to Camp Half-Blood to try and convince Clarisse and the Ares cabin to help fight the forces of Kronos. Percy also tells her she is the best pegasus rider at the camp. Porkpie and Guido assisted too along with the other pegasi from Camp Half-Blood, but Guido was injured after flying Percy and Annabeth to save Rachel Elizabeth Dare after Olympus was saved. Rachel also takes Blackjack after the battle and rides him back to camp.

Later on, when Percy, Hazel, and Frank enter the Amazon territory, they witness a pegasus being shipped off somewhere due to it being purchased.

The Mark of Athena

Blackjack appears again, and a pegasus tramples Coach Hedge's pizza on the Argo II. The Romans have a chariot pulled by two pegasi when they attack the Argo II in Charleston.

The House of Hades

Reyna rides a pegasus named Scipio to Greece, and upon landing she is forced to put it out of its misery, due to severe gryphon injuries.

The Blood of Olympus

Pegasus himself appears to give Reyna, Nico, and Coach Hedge a ride to Camp Half-Blood. He grants this favor because of Reyna's great friendship with her deceased pegasus, Scipio. Blackjack receives an arrow wound from Orion. Guido adopts Reyna as his human.
