Perhaps we can both try harder not to judge based on first impressions, eh?

–Sif to Alex Fierro in the Hammer of Thor.

Sif is the Norse Aesir goddess of the earth, grain, and fertility. She is the wife of Thor and the mother of Thrud and Ullr. She currently resides in Bilskirnir. The rowan tree is her sacred symbol.

History[]

Marriage with Thor[]

At one point, Sif married Thor, making him her second husband.

Encounter with Loki[]

It was well-known that Sif treasured her gorgeous golden locks. Loki found her asleep and decided to take advantage of it. As an act of spite, he sheared off every strand of her hair. Sif was horrified upon waking up.

When Thor found her in such distress he was outraged. He seized Loki and threatened to break every bone in his body. The trickster god offered to make his wife a new head of hair, far more beautiful than the original.

Thor accepted this proposal. Loki quickly went to Svartalfheim, the world of the dwarves. The master craftsman forged the perfect wig of flowing, floor-length, lustrous hair made of real gold. When it was placed on Sif's head, it became one with her flesh and the hair grew normally.

After that, Sif was known to gift heroes and pay her expenses with golden trophies, all woven from her hair. This made Thor call her his "trophy wife."

The Sword of Summer[]

Sif is mentioned twice in The Sword of Summer. First, her name is seen tattooed on her husband Thor's arm. Thor later references the time Loki stole her golden hair.

The Hammer of Thor[]

Sif saves Magnus Chase and his friends from mountain jotunn, intending for them to assist her husband in locating his hammer. In their conversation, she weaves them gold trophies and grants Hearthstone a bag of rowan runes. Sif then sends them down to her husband, Thor, and later gives then guest rooms in the upper levels of Bright Crack.

Sif dresses up Magnus, Samirah, and Alex for the jotunns' wedding. She earns Alex's grudging respect by granting her a golden garrote. The goddess then sees them off.

The Ship of the Dead[]

Sif is among the gods who have come to Vigridr to greet the crew of the Big Banana. She runs and hugs Alex in congratulations for her bravery.

Appearance[]

Sif once had beautiful long golden colored hair before Loki cut it off. When she appears to Magnus Chase and his friends, she wore an orange-red dress clasped at her shoulder with a silver and green brooch. She has fine elfish features and had long hair of red gold which is described as rich, warm, and lustrous. Sif resembles one of the Greek dryads.

Personality[]

Sif is widely known as a vain and narcissistic deity. At times she views the lives of mortal servants as disposable or unimportant. On multiple occasions, she displays cheerful obliviousness. According to Samirah, her self-absorbed nature was the whole reason Loki decided to punish her by shearing off her hair.

However, Sif does seem to be genuinely caring at times. Judging by her interactions with Magnus and his friends, she can be benevolent, warm, and helpful to others.

Abilities[]

She presumably possesses the standard abilities of a goddess.

  • Geokinesis: As the Goddess of the Earth, Sif has divine authority and absolute control of the earth.
  • Chlorokinesis: As the Goddess of Grain and Harvest, Sif could grant fertility to the earth, allowing plants to grow where they could not grow before, and even aided in the growth of plants simply by being near them. Sif is also able to detect and locate people if they are around moss or trees.
  • Crafting Gold: She can weave her gold hair into any material object. The hair she weaves magically grows back. She often uses this to pay off expenses.

Trivia[]

  • Sif's Greco-Roman equivalents would be Demeter/Ceres and Gaea/Terra.
  • Sif Mons, a volcano on the planet Venus, is named after her.
  • According to Samirah, the fairy tale Rapunzel originated from the golden hair of Sif.
