Washington Monument is an obelisk standing on the National Mall in Washington D.C., built to commemorate George Washington, the first president of the United States. The monument, which is made of marble, granite and bluestone gneiss, is both the world's tallest stone structure and the world's tallest obelisk standing at 554 feet 711/32 inches. Upon completion on October 9, 1888, it became the world's tallest structure and held the designation until 1889, when the Eiffel Tower was completed in Paris.
